Panthers LB Thomas Davis tears another ACL

You almost get the sense that some people think if they put the front office and coaching staff down a lot, people will think that they know something about football. Personally, I just think people like that know a lot about how to be a jerk and not much else.

This is a really unfortunate thing. It hurts our team, but we have depth to overcome. In that way it's a lot more like when Kris Jenkins got hurt in 2005 than Kemo last year. And it's happened early enough that it won't shake up chemistry on opening day.

We have depth at his position. Anderson played well there last year, and has the speed to excel in Meeks' system. He's not Davis, but he's going to look pretty good there.

We don't need to worry about money. Let Richardson do that--it won't hurt the cap and it keeps the option to keep him around open. I reckon that Hurney knows more about managing a roster and what you should and shouldn't do than all of the negative posters here combined. And the positive posters too... :)

What we need to worry about is whether Davis eventually comes back. I sure hope he does, but if he doesn't at least he gave his best years to Carolina. And at least it wasn't Beason.

Brutal. Hopefully he has a good recovery.

As much potential has he has shown, I don't think our season is going to be a bad one because he's on IR. We're fairly deep at LB. On defense, I believe everyone not named Jon Beason is pretty much interchangeable.

Man some of yall sound like the most ignorant whiney plie of bitches I have ever heard.

Crying about a class act who has dedicated himself fully to this team and your whining about him signing his tender.

I know lets kick a guy off the team, not give him any money, and leave him hurt and jobless; that will really get the lockeroom inspired and build the players' faith in the orginization.

I know this is the internet but try and show some godamn integrity.

You guys are going to be happy we picked this guy up.

Integrity and paying someone money when he is not working for it is two different things. Don't give me that crap about him being dedicated to the Panthers and being a class-act. Trust me I know, but this is still the real world you have to work for your paycheck.

Plus that is what Welfare is for.

But in all seriousness, this situation could have been handled a lot differently.

To sign or not to sign is really not the question. What inquiring minds want to know is how this will affect our plans on defense.

Davis is a fellow alum, so I really hate to say this, but I am a realist: He didn't give us anything last year, and he won't give us anything this year (if ever), but we still did alright without him, and, Lord willing, the defense will be even better this year.

Depending on what happens, Davis may truly become expendable---talent, and business wise before the season is over.

lol lol loooooooooooool people complaining about 3 million $ in an uncapped you. boo f**king hoo, Jake Delhomme just made off with over 12 million guaranteed.

you guys here are f**king ridiculous sometimes

yeah we're already paying Jake to not play for us, which is good. But add that 3 mill to the 13 mill we're giving Jake and thats a lil over 16 mill towards players that aren't playing for us.

That sucks for TD. Honestly, the $3 mil is not much money in the scheme of things and it doesn't count against the cap anyway, so I don't know why people are freaking out like Richardson pillaged their bank account to pay Thomas Davis.

In regards to the defense, I don't think this will hurt us much. If there was any position where we could afford to lose a starter it was in the LB core. And we fielded a pretty damn good defense without Davis last year. Jamar Williams looked awesome in his time on the field last year and has the ability to be a big play-maker for us. Anderson and Connor have shown that they can produce well with extended playing time and Norwood looks like a beast-in-the-making.

To summarize, everyone should calm the eff down.

That was after the season was over.

I am saying you can't sign player on IR that is on your roster so why let him sign his tender, just wait until next season then either give him a contract offer or don't give him a contract offer.

We tendered him back in March. You can't rescind a tender offer to a player due to injury just like you can't cut a player once he gets injured without reaching an injury settlement. You can't reach an injury settlement unless the player is under contract. So we had no choice in the matter. When we tendered him we gave him a contract offer. If he gets hurt during team activities you have to pay him if he signs his tender so we were on the hook anyway.

Players on your roster who are on IR are already signed or they can't be put on IR. A player who was on IR in 2009 doesn't stay on IR once the new year begins. If he can't play the next year he can be put on the physically unable to perform once training camp starts but before that you don't do anything since there is no limit on how many folks you sign or tender. The whole point in using IR and PUP is to keep a guy under contract without having to count him against the roster limitations.

What you are saying makes no sense.

BTW Brees finished the year on IR and was signed in the offseason. Davis finished the year on IR and was tendered in the offseason. Same thing. A tender is a contract offer the same as signing a player. And those injury letters they sign guarantee that if they get injured the team will honor the tender or pay them (something to that effect).
