In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.  

Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently. 

I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.

It's going to be hard to justify having a player as expensive as Corbett on the bench, especially when he is likely a better player than Mays. IMO, Mays is not really a great developmental prospect as as a prospective starter but he is very valuable as a utility OG/C backup. 

I feel the same way about BC. You don't want him starting because he generally is worse than all of our starters at each position. But his ability to come in and competently replace a multitude of positions is very valuable.

To that note on development of these guys, however, we do need to keep adding OL depth almost every draft. That way eventually we can get out from under these onerous contracts at OG. I love Lewis and Hunt but we can't keep having two of the highest paid guards in the NFL that aren't also consistently All Pro caliber players.

As long as it's less than $10M per. I'm thinking 5-6M per year. He has proven that he's a good depth piece but can't be counted on to start and play an entire season. Giving him a big contract is the kind of move that gets this team in cap trouble time after time. Take out the emotions and see it for what it is. Draft a starting C or move up the kid from Arkansas. This oline would be great for a young C to come in and develop.

I trust Corbett more than I do Zavala at this point. Solid depth that can start anywhere on the interior while also being affordable.

Can they give him a three game contract? That's the number of games he'll probably be able to play next year.

Sure Corbett is better than Zavala or Mays but what does that matter if he is on IR?

Zavala and Mays are at least available.

Corbett would be nice depth but he also has to be comfortable being a backup, which he may not want.

Additionally, we have so much invested at OG that it really makes very little sense to have an expensive OG backup, as well.

If he isn't in the cards at center, there isn't really a reason to keep him around.

The only savings we would get are post June 1 designation. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do.

I suspect we restructure and keep him as C #1.

He is under contract through 2026 but since he has no salary attached for 2025 and 2026 they are voidable years which were set to trigger on March 11 unless something is done. So if we want to keep him we need to negotiate a salary without kicking too much of the dead cap down the road. Or  if we don't reach agreement and the contract automatically voids, we get an 8 million cap hit and Corbett becomes an unrestricted free agent. I think the ball is in his court actually. Does he want to be here or not?

I am not sure about Mays' ceiling--it is not that high, but I saw some sideline footage that showed he and Hunt seemed to have a strong relationship.  Mutual respect of teammate you work beside, if that is what it is, is a pretty good indicator.  I dont understand the cost of keeping Corbett vs the alternative, but I can say that if Corbett is better than Mays, he has not shown it here yet.  In the limited time both have been on the field (and I used to coach OL in high school--it changes the way you watch the game--everything is focused on the first few steps of the OL and then your eye works back to the ball.  I was stunned that Bozeman was as bad as he was--not the right offense for him, I suppose.  Corbett was very disappointing, but at times, he was good.  Mays was not firing off on run plays like he should, but in pass pro he got better each game--I think he had a lot to do with Young's rebirth.  Run blocking is a concern, but not a major one.  He just needs help with a NT or someone in his gap.  Still, Corbett is old and oft injured.  Take the cheapest way out, but I do not see him starting here. 

And since Mays has experience at all 5 positions (going back to Bama and Tennessee) he is the ideal OL sub (to your point).  Pay attention to Kingston--he caught my eye on a play or two and I had to google his number to see who it was.

I didn't see that 2025 was a void year. Oof.

Yeah, we are in a rough spot there. We picked poorly on an injured guy to play Saints cap tricks.

Corbett is also just not a center. I will never understand the thought process with that move overall. Admittedly, he was better than expected. I really thought it was going to be a disaster.

Knowing this is all void years left, I just don't see much justification keeping Corbett.

We have our answers at OG and he doesn't make sense as a backup unless he is planning on taking a VERY team friendly deal. 

Make some FA moves and draft moves and try to get an upgrade at C and some more depth alongside the current guys.

After stealing as much $$$ as he has from us, he should play for vet min to make up for it.
