Dane Jackson released

This move will generate a dead money charge of $2.5MM but it will yield $3.35MM in savings for Carolina. The team was already mid-pack in the NFL in terms of spending power as free agency approaches, but additional funds will help Carolina’s efforts in improving a defense which ranked 23rd against the pass in 2024.

The Panthers hope to work out an extension with Horn this offseason, and keeping fellow starter Michael Jackson in the fold on a new pact is also a priority. Cornerback could be a position to watch with respect to at least one notable addition over the coming months, but in any case Dane Jackson will not be part of Carolina’s plans.

Good on Dan.

He had pounded the table for Dane in Buffalo and then did the same to bring him here. Mike Jackson outplayed him, and Dan is cutting ties rather than holding on to a guy that was outperformed by other guys on the roster.

Best of luck to Dane. I'm sure he'll get picked up somewhere as depth at least. Worst case scenario, he'll make a practice squad.

I also thought this was a solid signing but nice to see a pivot quickly rather than our usual hubris of "well we are smarter" and a double down.

I still believe Dan is an average or above average pro personnel guy. I just wish he had any clue in the draft.

I swear I seen somewhere he had a 1 million guarantee for this year cut or not.

They must believe in Chau Smith-Wade and making good progress on the Michael Jackson contract.

I found it odd when Dan went fully seahag " We want long arms tall CBs " and then signed the BY of CBs. When you are hurt, the team finds out your true value..... most times everyone is replaceable with cheaper options..

    • Eh. Evero has been here through now 2 coaching regimes. He also pushed for guys like DJ Johnson and has apparently had significant enough input on some free agency moves too. At this point nobody knows about Canales. Even Bryce Young's progress has to be taken with a grain of salt. The rubber has to meet the road in a big way in 2025. But I think it's fair to say the plan from the front office seems to be to let Canales focus on the offense. Although some people could rightly argue he needs to be more hands on across the roster given the fact his defense was 32/32 last season. And look let's be real here. Virtually everyone here is going to agree Rhule was a conman and not a good NFL head coach by any means. But he did swindle our owner out of a generational amount of money. That cannot be understated. With Reich though while he was not the man for the job he didn't even coach here a full season. Saying he didn't develop anyone while giving our front office a pass for their egregiously subpar drafting before and after he was gone (see our 2024 2nd round pick) seems odd. The simple fact of the matter is we need to both draft significantly better and we need to develop talent better.
    • There is literally no risk to this move.  They are constantly churning the bottom of the roster.  Bringing them in has no impact on their tight end decisions for this coming season.
