Are the Panthers overstocked with DB's?

This question may seem rather odd, given that then Panthers have no CB ready to replace Richard Marshall if he decides to leave in 2011, but due to a tight roster, while the Panthers might like to carry 10 DB's on their final roster, it's very unlikely that they can find roster romm for more than 9 DB's.

The 5 DB's sure to make the roster are:

Chris Gamble (6-1, 200, age 27) - LCB

Charles Godfrey (5-11, 205, 4.43-40, age 24) - SS

Richard Marshall (5-11, 189, 4.42-40, age 25)- RCB

Sherrod Martin (6-1, 198, 4.43-40, age 25)- FS

Captain Munnerlyn (5-8, 186, 4.51-40, age 22)- Nickle Back

Will the last 4 DB roster spots go to the which of the following DB's:

CB - C. J. Wilson (6-1, 195, 4.62-40, age 25)

The 5 veteran DB's claimed, or signed as free agents:

CB - Marcus Walker (5-10, 197, 4.46-40, age 24) a special teams standout

CB/FS - Marcus Hudson (6-2, 200, 4.55-40, age 27) a special teams standout

CB - Brian Witherspoon (5-10, 175, 4.29-40, age 25) a fast returner

SS - Aaron Francisco (6-2, 207, 4.74-40, age 26) a special teams standout

SS - Dexter Jackson (6-0, 210, age 32)

The 4 rookie DB's:

FS/CB - Jordan Pugh (5-10, 196, age 22, 4.44-40)

CB - R. J. Stanford (5-10, 183, age 22, 4.44-40)

CB - Robert McClain (5-10, 195, age 22, 4.52-40)

SS - Matt O'Hanlon (5-11, 207, age 24, 4.64-40)

It seems certain that of those last 4 DB roster spots, that 2 will be S's, and 2 CB's. Those 2 S's will almost certainly be rookie FS-Jordan Pugh, and veteran SS-Aaron Francisco (unless the Panthers feel CB-Marcus Hudson can play SS). The 2 CB's will most likely come the following group of 5 (in the most likely order) CB's, Marcus Walker, R. J. Stanford, C. J. Wilson, Marcus Hudson, and Brian Witherspoon, with Robert McClain and Matt O'Hanlon maybe making the Practice Squad.

Holy schnikies! Thats impressive.

On another note, is it not obvious to you that we are revamping special teams??

it's a valid question, one that can be asked of several different positions this summer. all i will say is the players that win out will necessarily be feisty, competitive, and totally on board with the scheme and philosophy. that can't hurt at all. it will make the defense predictable (to the coaches and very attentive fans) and will help keep everyone on the same page.

Good post. I think you got it right on point with who makes it, but I don't think the panthers are worried about Marshall in 2011, they just need him to play this year, and try to get something done. If he leaves, I don't think anyone but Munnerlyn can replace on that list. I think the final spot goes to the "third person" R.J. Stanford

We have 80+ guys coming to camp so we are not overloaded. Whenever we try to fix a position we bring in a bunch of guys to try and find a few decent guys out of the bunch. The same applies here. Most of the FA guys we picked up weren't starters but special teams players or return specialists who will be trying to make the team as a specialist not necessarily a starting or backup DB. Some of the guys might make it on special teams some may make it as backups and some are just training camp fodder who we have taken a flier on.

JUst like we brought in 5 or 6 linemen the year we picked up Vincent, this year we will pick up some DBs and let a bunch go. Might put a few on the practice squad as well.

I think it was a good move and should work out fine for us.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't have the SS Dexter Jackson on our roster. We have the WR out of Appalachian State named Dexter Jackson. Easy mix-up.

This + Robert McClain is only 5-9 and Marcus Walker is not a "special teams standout"

At this time of year, shouldn't the Panthers be overstocked on everything??

Very good point. If we are thin at any position with 80 options to choose from, it is by our own doing. We should have plenty of folks in every facet at this point.
