Should Panthers Try To Obtain WR Dwayne Bowe?

The Kansas City Chiefs are close to the breaking point with WR Dwayne Bowe, and may soon be willing to part ways with their 2007 1st round pick. Should the Panthers be giving them a call?

Bowe's career started off great, with 70 catches as a rookie, followed by 86 catches in his 2nd season. Everything started going down hill for Bowe last season. He got in new Head Coach Todd Haley's dog house several times (being benched once or twice), he was suspended 4 games for using a banned substance, and his production dropped to only 47 catches. Now he's angered all his teammates by blowing the whistle on their "importing" of young women, to their hotel rooms for away games. After that, I don't see how he can remain in that locker room, but the Chiefs say he's down to his last chance (according to Michael Blunde, at ProFootballWeekly.com).

Dwayne Bowe (6-2, 221, 4.51-40, 1.53-10) has 203 catches, for 2,606 yards (a 12.8 yard average), with 16 TD's, in his 3 year career. On the negative side, Bowe lead the league in drops last season (11), and was 2nd in 2008, with 13 drops.

I don't know what the Chiefs would ask in trade for Bowe, but their GM Scott Pioli has that New England custom of often trading a player at below market value, now Bowe's value is now down from what it once was, and the threat he may leave as a free agent. Maybe the Chiefs would trade Bowe for Brandon LaFell and a 3rd or 4th round pick in 2011, or maybe a 3-4 OLB like Eric Norwood or Hilee Taylor, in some combination with LaFell. Bowe, by still being on his rookie contract, doesn't have the big salary that prevents the penny pinching Panthers from trading for other veterans.

If you were the Panthers, would you call the Chiefs, to see what they might take for Bowe.

Stopped reading after this...

Until JR is not in control of the Panthers you can forget about players with any kind of troubles (drugs or legal issues) coming to Carolina. Unless is is already on the team (Jarrett) you just won't see those types of players coming here. Right or Wrong, that doesn't matter. After Carruth, JR doesn't seem willing to deal with the headaches that come with a player like that.

    • he averaged 2 yards in YAC per reception last year.  He can't generate quick separation.  He was debating retirement last year.    Yet we championing him as some great option.  AT is a savvy vet we force feed the ball too......on a team starved for basic offense the last couple seasons.  We overrated AT.  Which is why some freak when people like JT on his podcast point out the painfully obvious about him.
    • The Athletic has us ranked 28th on their post-draft power rankings, mainly due to us picking T-Mc instead of defense in round 1. They recognize we needed WR help, but... https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6317651/2025/04/29/nfl-power-rankings-post-draft-rookies-eagles-chiefs-bills/
    • I mean, he is a slot technician.  That's what he does.  So, in a good offense, you would be trotting him out there on 3rd downs and situationally.....to not take what they give him but to move chains.  It's a niche.  AT hasn't threatened defenses in years.  Last time we saw Renfrow on the field he averaged..... 6 yards YAC per catch.  Adam Thielen last year averaged....2 yards in YAC per catch last year.  I still contend in reality, AT isn't a slot WR.  Not in reality.  He is an aging rec TE.  And those aren't the same thing.  AT simply can't generate quick separation or provide YAC.
