Would You Have Drafted Differently Than The Panthers?

I've gone on record as saying this was a great draft by the Panthers, maybe their best ever. However, the lingering questions about the Panthers D-Line, and the teams prospects for the coming season, have me wondering if you (the fans that poster on this forum) might have drafted differently than the Panthers did this year.

We all now support the players drafted by the Panthers, and wish them great success, but I'm sure some of you might have wished for another position/player to address another area of need (DT?). We all posted our thoughts on what players we thought the Panthers should draft, but with each player drafted the list of players the Panthers could chose from might have changed from what was expected. This is a good time to go on record (maybe the last time), and post your draft ideas (if they differ from the Panthers actual draft picks), before it can be said that your being influenced by their actual on field play.

Here is a list of the Panthers draft picks:

#48 - QB Jimmy Clausen

#78 - WR Brandon LaFell

#89 - WR/QB Armanti Edwards (traded 2011 2nd rd pick for this pick)

#124- OLB/DE Eric Norwood (traded #112 pick for #124 and #198 picks)

#175- DE Greg Hardy

#198- WR David Gettis

#202- CB/S Jordan Pugh

#204- QB Tony Pike

#223- CB R. J. Stanford

#249- CB Robert McClain

Now is your chance to show how you might have drafted differently, and let the future prove who was correct. Maybe, after this season is over, we can revisit this post, and see who's draft ideas were better. It's your chance to fill any of the needs you point out on this Panthers team.

Here are my picks:

#48 - QB Jimmy Clausen

#78 - DT Earl Mitchell (6-2, 296, 4.78-40, 1.56-10)

#89 - WR/QB Armanti Edwards

#124- CB/S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (6-0 1/4, 207, 4.30-40)

#175- DE Greg Hardy

#198- WR David Gettis

#202- CB/S Jordan Pugh

#204- LB Jamar Chaney (6-0 7/8, 242, 4.54-40, 1.54-10)

#223- NT Travis Ivey (6-4, 341, 5.23-40)

#249- WR Scott Long (6-2 1/8, 216, 4.46-40) or WR Blair White (6-2 1/4, 209, 4.42-40) if Long's medical reports didn't checkout.

I like Brandon LaFell, and hope he has 60-80 catches a season for the next 10 years, but just feel they needed Mitchell's inside pass rush more (he's also faster than any Panthers DE but Brown or Taylor). The choice of Armanti Edwards at #89 is a very close call for me, because WR Taylor Price (#90 to the Patriots) is bigger, and DE Everson Griffen (#100 to the Vikings), a good size DE who runs a 4.60-40, but Edwards QB ability tips the scales. OLB/DE Eric Norwood may become a great NFL pass rusher, but LB Jamar Chaney is faster (and weighs only 3 pounds less), and CB/S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah could be a great replacement for Marshall next year (and backup all 4 DB spots this season). Hardy was a steal at #175, and Gettis answers the need for a big WR, but Joe Webb (#199 to the Vikings) is equally good. My pick of LB Jamar Chaney at #204 would have even been a good pick in the 3rd or 4th round, and while QB Tony Pike was a good pick, it's almost impossible to develop 4 young QB's at once, so he might get lost in the shuffle. My #223 pick of NT Travis Ivey would fill the Panthers need for a 2nd big NT, but I was also very tempted by TE Dorin Dickerson, DE C. J. Wilson, DT Sean Lissemore, DT Jeff Owens, and TE/LB Jameson Konz as well. My #249 pick of WR's Scott Long or Blair White makes up for passing over WR Brandon LaFell.

Here is where the players I substituted were actually selected:

DT Earl Mitchell #81-Texans

CB/S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah #126-Cowboys

LB Jamar Chaney #220- Eagles

NT Travis Ivey undrafted, signed by Dolphins

WR Scott Long undrafted, signed by 49ers

WR Blair White undrafted, signed by Colts

Seeems like every year I would have picked other guys than the ones we picked. But really since 2005 we have done a good job picking up the guys we did. For every guy who doesn't look like a great choice, there are some others who end up being great. How many folks thought when we picked Martin last year that he would contribute right away. And guys like Bernadeau in the 7th were a steal.

I have to say that I really liked our draft this year. Yeah we could have picked up more guys on defense but honestly we have all complained that we never draft quarterbacks or enough receivers and we did both this year. I think Fox really went out there and decided to fix the offense. I am not as confident about the defense but am really looking forward to seeing what the offense can do.

Really good point here. Some may question the picks that we make, but how often are Fox and Hurney wrong in the draft? Everyone has their misses, but I feel they do a better job than most.

None of the players drafted or would have drafted have played a down in the N F L

As in seasons past, alot of the players fans had the H O T 's for did not live up to their hype !

I'll stick with what the Panthers drafted and cross my fingers most can transition to N F L

Here is a list of the Panthers draft picks:

#48 - QB Jimmy Clausen

#78 - WR Brandon LaFell

#89 - WR/QB Armanti Edwards (traded 2011 2nd rd pick for this pick)

#124- OLB/DE Eric Norwood (traded #112 pick for #124 and #198 picks)

#175- DE Greg Hardy

#198- WR David Gettis

#202- CB/S Jordan Pugh

#204- QB Tony Pike

#223- CB R. J. Stanford

#249- CB Robert McClain

Love the fact that we got Armanti, but like most I'm not sure it was worth the price to move up. I can see AE developing into a Wes Welker type in the slot, but at the same time I can also see him riding the bench and being cut in the next few years. He seems to have the right attitude and the work ethic, so I'm optimistic.

The last four picks were head-scratchers for me. I understand Pike was most likely a "value" pick at 204, but with Gamble, Martin and Munnerlyn in the secondary, I would have expected them to go with at least one DT to fill the need there.
