Any backup vet QB is going to cost around what Dalton got if not more. All NFL teams have to pay “starting safety” money for a backup unless you roll the dice on an unproven rookie. If we didn’t give Dalton “starting safety money” we would’ve given it to someone else. It’s just the reality of the position

Make him the asst BFF QB coach and pay the 4million to hold BYs hand, theres no cap space there. Panthers have less than 1% chance at playoffs, draft a QB in the mid rounds and use that cash for starters.

I liked Derek Anderson a lot but he was a pal nothing more. Cam Newton in his early years was rookie of the year and built like a tank. People might have had questions about Cam's accuracy but that was it. Nothing at all comparable to the still unanswered questions about Bryce. Not to mention Anderson never had to play any extended time nor did he look horrendously awful in the process.

At the end of the day the people justifying this are the same people who were in here shouting down concern about preseason last year. Carrying water for the decision makers of the sports franchise with the worst win percentage in professional sports is just coping.

I think everyone on this board knew that they weren’t gonna bring legit competition for Bryce’s job next year. They’re all in on him including his backup QB mentor.

I’m gonna save my hand-wringing for the draft. Because you know some stupid poo is gonna go down

So you’d like to waste a mid round draft pick on a QB when we have a million other holes to fill? Heck, we could use one of those mid round picks you’d like to use on a QB on an impactful RB instead. It’s a very deep RB class.  Also, have you heard of Will Grier and Matt Corral? They sure panned out. Panthers historically can’t draft QB’s past the first round worth a damn. I’m glad you’re not the GM

You wish I was the GM, 100% Id have the team in much better position than the last 6 years.

Dave is known for coaching up WRs and QBs, but didn't have a say in BY. Allow the guy and his hand picked staff to try and find a QB, their QB. The cap hit would be around 900,000, bargain compared to the rusty red rifle.

Like I said when this news broke, if DC is a qb whisperer then why the hell are we not leaning into that and getting a guy he can develop for when Young inevitably gets (Most qbs miss games) or simply for trade value

IMO it's best to have a vet on the team, having three young inexperienced QBs on the roster is a recipe for disaster

I am QB insecure.  I mean, all you have to do is look at the Panther royal blood line to know why--How many people thought Sam Darnold was back before the Lions game?  I did.  I was like, "The light finally came on.  No more darkness.  No more ghosts."  Then the Lights went out in Detroit and the ghosts came back for his final two games.  How would you like to be the Vikings GM right now?  At least they have a QB in waiting.

I think we all see a direct correlation between Darnold and OL play.  In Charlotte, Bryce started getting it when his OL started playing well, specifically, the IOL. Are we set at QB because Bryce went on a 10 game hot streak?  I think we are, but little people see ghosts too.

I would have a list of developmental QBs that could be available on day 3.  If one is there, if you are not confident that Plummer will ever become more than he is, I would take one.  Yes, we have other needs.  But most day 3 picks don't last and a QB with undeveloped talent might be the way to go.  Rourke, for example. Quick release, winner.

I've been wondering if we did spend a day 3 pick on a QB, would we end up having a chance to develop him if he wasn't on the 53 man roster. Stashing him on the PS seems kind of risky if you think you have someone who could become something. There's really only 2 roster spots devoted to the QB position and JMO, you should always try to be developing both unless you're a serious playoff contender. At that point, having a short term starter level backup is essential. You need someone who can come in, play a few games, and not go 0-3. Otherwise, it should be about improving your overall talent level, and moving on from those that don't make the cut.

You can protect 4 players on the PS from week to week. I had to Google it.

FEBRUARY 21: The deal is now official, and Over the Cap notes Dalton’s locked in compensation includes a $2.65MM signing bonus. Thanks to a 2027 void year, his cap charges will check in at $3.2MM and $5.85MM for the next two seasons while serving as a cost-effective backup in Carolina.

FEBRUARY 18: The Panthers have signed quarterback Andy Dalton to a two-year, $8MM extension, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal includes $6MM in fully guaranteed money with a maximum value of $10MM.

Dalton will be under contract in Carolina through the 2026 season and can continue his mentorship of former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, with whom he has a “close relationship,” according to Schefter.

Both quarterbacks earned praise from within and without the Panthers organization for how they handled the tumultuous 2024 season.

I think the Panthers have like 120 million in space for 2026, *if Dan doesn't use it this season like he did with signing of Lewis and Hunt.
