Who Starts On Panthers D-Line?

Who starts on Panthers d-Line? Closest thing I can figure is:

LE: Brayton

DT: Tyler

NT: Leonard

RE: Johnson

With Brown and Irvin being brought in as situational pass rushers and rotation guys.

I see lots of rotations this year... However the one change I might would make is Everette starting and Johnson being rotation. Don't be surprised to see Hardy be a surprise as well. He's already bigger and faster than all of them and has all the tools... it just remains to be seen whether he can translate it to the field.

But there are a lot of bodies with this group. Anybody else see another combination at the beginning (or the end) of the season?

Well...this is what I predict...

LE: Tyler Brayton

I think he gets this based mostly off of loyalty and the fact that he's solid.

DT: Corvey Irvin

I don't know what is going to happen with our DTs...I'm lost, but I want to be against the "norm" of Tyler and Leonard. I predict Meeks will want a quicker line-up so Irvin will surprise quite a few people and start.

NT: Tank Tyler

I'mma be honest. I only picked him because I have him as the sleeper on Defense and Jarrett as the sleeper on offense.

RE: Everette Brown

At first, I had C.Johnson here. But I'm starting to think that because we gave up a 1st rounder for him and his own work ethic, Everette will start.

I would say that the top two DEs and DTs that make it out of TC healthy. :)

If I was guessing today (and I am), I would project Johnson, Irvin, Leonard, and Brayton. I like Tyler, but we need more pressure from the UT and unless we get run over he's going to be the backup NT. Brown may be starting by years end, but let's see how he handles the run this year before getting too excited.

I agree with this.

Some are high on Brown and saying he should be starting and Johnson should be rotated, but Johnson has shown more while he's been here. Yes, I realize he's been here longer than Brown, but I think he's a better all-around end right now.

That's not to say that Brown won't work himself into the starting rotation sometime this season, as you said. I just don't think he's shown that he can be the starter yet.

Here is what I think....

LEFT DEFENSIVE END

Stater- Tyler Brayton (There is no way that he will not be starting)

Back-up- Greg Hardy (I think he needs to switch to left end to see more playing time)

Back-up- Eric Norwood (He should be on the depth chart as and end and a linebacker)

RIGHT DEFENSIVE END

Starter- Everette Brown (It is time to see what Brown is made of)

Back-up- Charles Johnson (I think he will split time on the field with Brown)

Back-up- Hilee Taylor (He will see limited time but could possibly tally a sack or two)

NOSE TACKLE

Starter- Louis Leonard (He is the biggest tackle on the roster, so he gets the start)

Back-up- Corvey Irvin (He is not my favorite but there is not much depth at NT)

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Starter- Tank Tyler (Tyler is the most qualified player for the job)

Back-up- Derek Landri (I think he suprises many in camp and earns the back-up spot)

Back-up- Ed Johnson (He is a former Colt and gets some love from Meeks)

CUTS

DE- Eric Moore (Nothing against him, there is just no room left for him)

DT- Nick Hayden (He has had his chance and has not impressed, he needs to leave)

DT- Andre Neblett (Once again there is not enough room for him)

LE: Tyler Brayton

He's the "old man" of the group, and the most likely choice for a leader on the defensive line. He's nothing spectacular, but he's a solid veteran.

UT: Tank Tyler/Corey Irvin

I could really see this position going either way. After watching Tank play his HS ball and him being a NC boy, I'm a little bit biased towards him. I'd say this should be an open competition, and let the best UT win.

NT: Louis Leonard

Who else is it going to be? We always go with a big guy at NT, and Leonard is the biggest we have.

RE: Charles Johnson

Johnson is the best all-around defensive end that we have. He's been successful in limited snaps as a rotational player, showing the ability to stop the run and get a decent pass rush. His play the past couple years has earned him a starting job.

Those guys will, IMO, be our starters but I expect to see a lot of players getting rotated on our D-Line. If Irvin and Tank both show up, we could see them on the interior on passing downs. I hope we see some four DE sets. Hardy has all the physical tools to become a starter, but some question his work ethic. And if Everette Brown can prove he can hold his own against the run, he's going to grab one of the starting jobs at DE.

I think we only keep 9 DL every year. 5 DE/4DT or 4DE/5DT.

I am still unhappy with the defensive line as a whole, it scares me to death. I'm comfortable with every other unit. It's the defensive tackles in particular that frighten me. The DE's are just inexperienced and untested, but there is talent. I was happy when we landed Greg Hardy, I've always been high on Charles Johnson, and while I'm still iffy about Brown, the work ethic and desire is there to at least become a pass rush specialist. And Hilee Taylor needs to get involved in passing situations.

Anyway, I think are best bet is to use a constantly rotating defensive line. Open the game with Johnson, Brayton, Leonard, and Tank Tyler. From there, send Greg Hardy and Corvey Irvin in on a variety of situations at there positions as relief, put Brayton at DE in short yardage/goal line situations, then in obvious passing situations have Brown and Taylor at DE with Brayton and Ed Johnson at DT.

Thats my plan of action. Thing is, I'm high on us at every other position. But with the schedule we play, a bad D-line can break us this season. We play smash mouth teams with big, physical offensive lines and top running backs. I think are pass rush will be fine because with the teams we play, pass blocking is a weakness among many. But will they even need to pass against us?

We don't know Ed Johnson, Louis Leonard,Corvey Irvin, Tank Tyler, Andre Neblet AT ALL...we've seen a bit out of Leonard and Tyler, but what, a few games??

Ed Johnson is an enigma. Irvin...had his redshirt season last year. Neblet, an UDRFA.

With front office standing pat on FA's and draft, they must feel that these players bring something to the table. That's what's going to be so interesting about this particular training camp...who are these guys? who can play and who cannot?

Note...I didn't even mention Hayden. If he's a starter going into the 2nd/3rd preseason game...then we've got major problems.

Fox has traditionally always had his better seasons when people doubt the team...this is one of the areas that people point to when dismissing the panthers.

July is one month away, and can't wait to find out the answers as to who's got what and who's getting cut!

Agree with that statement 110%
