i disagree with this whole post. the biggest thing working against hockey is no TV contract. tonight for example. the game is on versus. LOL

i also believe the season is too long.

This has a lot to do with the league president. He=assclown

well...I sort of disagree with that....he's done a poo load to try to grow hockey in the US and it just really hasn't caught on as wide spread as he wanted. Phoenix for example would be back in Winnipeg by now if not for Bettman. He is also negotiating with ESPN to try to get hockey coverage there once again and another all American Stenley Cup feeds right into that.

I don't see how anyone can say that the National Freethrow Association is more exciting than the NHL and keep a straight face.

I can watch an NHL game from the second it starts to the very end. In NBA, it's the same thing every single game. Regular season is beyond boring, and the post season is just laughable. David Stern(using the refs as his minions) picks a team that he thinks will end up earning him the most money by winning or losing, and the game is officiated accordingly.

I've never seen a sport where the officiating has such an impact every game. Sure, there are some bad refs in the NFL/all sports, but nothing like you see in the NBA. If you're a star player, you shouldn't be allowed to do anything you want to get to the free throw line. That's the way it is now. Give the ball to Lebron/etc, he drives it in, and it's an automatic trip to the line. Ridiculous. Any other player that plays the way Dwight Howard plays would be suspended, but he gets away with it. Either remove the ticky tacky bullshit fouls or call them fairly.

i don't think it's widespread in america, especially in the south or west because we didn't grow up as kids playing and loving it. our exposure was usually limited to the olympics. however, now, like soccer, kids are playing in school and in rec leagues. i'm 42 and when i grew up in eastern NC my high school only offered football, basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, golf, and track. they now include soccer and lacross. there is no ice rink here but my kid's friends drive 2 hours each weekend to virginia beach to play in a hockey league.

now we have a team and the sport is growing. it doesn't happen overnight, sometimes it takes a generation to grow.

just my .02 worth.

I think most people acknowledge that hockey isn't as popular because it's more difficult to play. You can't just walk out and play in your back yard. For one there is no ice. Also, people get butthurt because a majority would be awful for a long time. It's one of the few sports where everything you do is not natural to you.

i enjoy watching but get bored quickly. i find myself online while the game is on. while watching a panthers game, i'm focused on every play. growing up in a small town in the south, i knew nothing of hockey except for the olympics.

one question though, why don't they get a really big fat guy to play goalie? they could crane in one of those guys that can't get off his couch and plop him down in front of the net and block 90% of it.

you'd think they'd have really big defensive tackle type guys playing goalie.

i miss football. i wish summer would be over already.

You have to go to games with good teams playing. ;)

Watching from a screen is like not watching one at all.

I watched some of the Broad Street Bullies the other night...very informative and entertaining.

    • I'm going to be real, the reason that vote ended up so lop-sided by the end was directly due to my programming. So there's nothing tongue in cheek about it. Also I left PFF after the Collinsworth acquisition (didn't want to move to Cincy) but have stayed involved in analytics via backdoor channels, but I can absolutely say that the experience was eye-opening, not because those guys are unquestionable football savants and that I became one by proxy, but because the amount of information that becomes available outside of what the typical fan has access to is revelatory and also really drives home how much context is still being missed even with all of that information. You don't discover that you know everything, you discover how much you still can't know no matter how hard you try, hence my point about the NFL not being able to figure out what makes a QB good. There's a lot of AI work going into that now and even that only seems to further confuse things vs. actually enlighten the problem. In the professional realm teams don't really talk about quarterbacks as A strictly being better than B, but how A can potentially perform better than B given a specific context of C. Of course those contexts may be wider for A than B, but there's also contexts where B can outshine A, even with lesser talent surrounding them. So what good teams strive to do is ultimately define a process of how they want their entire team to operate under schematically, find players that fit that scheme, and hopefully find a guy whose skillset will be maximized running that scheme with those players. Where bad teams fall of the wagon is constantly shifting those schemes and chasing bad fits or fads vs. sticking with a core identity and developing it.
    • there is a 100 mile long list of NFL players and coaches going to bat and defending horrible play from teammates.
    • In 6 games, we've only had 6 hurries??? ... that can't be accurate
