The issue I think most have(myself included) is why are you having to train a 5 year college player and 1st round WR how to catch the ball?

Dude, you know the Panthers are suckers for one-year wonders with high RAS scores.  It's like catnip to our front office.  Who needs a player with 2-4 years of solid production with a meh RAS score?  I mean, who wants a bikini model with pointy elbows, right?  We end up with the chick in the low lit club who looks super hot at 2am only to wake up the next morning hung over to see her without the fake eyelashes, wig, layers of makeup and her wonder bra, girdle, padded panties and a pair of spanx on the bedroom floor.  Yeah, that's who we are as an organization.

I've told this story on here before but in in the early 2000's after a panther game my friends and I ran into Tom Sorenson of the Charlotte Observer at the southend brewery.  He sat with us for a while and at some point he was asked directly about why the CO wasnt more critical of Jerry Richardson.   He basically said Charlotte is a nice quiet southern town and the people here didnt want those types of stories or those types of reporters/columnists that cause drama.  I am obviously paraphrasing but we asked about why the paper wasnt going after shinn and the hornets harder as well when he was going through his troubles and all the crappy moves they made.  He just said there is not an audience for that.   We argued and argued and he just didnt understand.  Maybe he was playing dumb but I remember being incredulous at the time that the people in the media thought that asking hard questions would turn off readers

Tom is a very smart person.  He knew the answer.  I once said to him "Ron Rivera is undefeated as a coach when his job is on the line." He asked me if he could use that line.  Later, I asked him why he did not use it.  He said, "Gerry (my name), you know we can't rock the boat around here."  I was there during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings and that controversy about Anita Hill was going on.  A colleague there, Angela Wright, was called to testify on Hill's behalf--they had worked together in the past and she witnessed it.  Now remember, the CO building has a Pulitzer prize under glass at the entrance for their investigative journalism concerning the PTL scandal, but she talked to me just after (days after) being on every news channel in the world--getting off her plane.  I was at a table (the sports department worked nights 4 pm-1 am, and her department worked 8am to 5pm--so we barely spent any time together. She came up to me and said, "That was scary.  I have been told (by the CO management?) not to say a word about it." She then asked me to meet her later when she felt comfortable talking.  I barely knew her, but we chatted a few times and it never came up again.

That brings me to the Jerry Richardson "Pie Chart" presser in January (I think) of 2011.  Darin Gantt had written an article about the possible NFL strike, and Richardson was on that committee.  During the rare presser, he snapped at Gantt a few times and seemed to flirt with Morgan Fogerty.  After that conference, Gantt was reassigned to something like Volleyball at Winthrop.

Maybe Tom was aware of something he could not talk about--but you were within your rights to question him about it.

Theres was an Instagram pic with him on one of those scooters that evaluates the foot/ankle. Couple weeks ago at some fast food place if I remember right.

He played hurt for the whole season and lost some confidence too. Did everyone forget him missing most of OTAs and rookie camp due to hamstring/injuries. He stayed off IR and kept playing with all sorts of hand, wrist, leg, ankle, hammy, injuries.... Didnt stop fans from jumping on him in his rookie year......

Probably because he didn't really appear to have above middling college football player's ability to track and catch the ball.

Also, if he was REALLY that dinged up, take every South Carolina player off the board for the foreseeable future. IDK WTF they are doing down there but I don't want anymore glass players.

I think he had 500 yards and 4 TDs, both were good for 8th among rookies. That was with BY finding his mojo in week 9.

He had a good rookie year, fans need to realize this.

Sure there were a couple awful drops at important moments and body catching as the season wore on. Those are correctable and if he's fully healthy, I believe he will improve on those numbers.

Did he not lead all rookies in drops, as well?

I get looking at the bright side but there wasn't much bright about XL's year aside from him definitely being better as a route runner than expected.

I don't have that stat available - https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/nfl-rookie-receiving-yards-leaders-2024

The number was discussed here and it was normal among *all WR. It just felt more cause a couple of those drops were back breakers. I know one drop he caught 95% of the ball, I think it was the eagles drop.

I think you always look at the whole side, he had a good rookie yardage and TD year with some poorly timed drops. He can improve and he can can slump. Sure he could have played better, same time he could have played much worse too. He was the 32nd player drafted, not some top 5-10 savior. I thought he had good rookie year with ups and downs. Knowing he did so with lack of reps due to injuries and he kept playing with questionable QB play, that looks to me like he can improve his level of play. Not on the stats either, he looked good blocking too, many big gains he was helping with down field blocks.

I think Malik Nabers did with 9 drops.    Although I am sure Nabers got targeted more.

He was tied for 2nd among rookies and was tied for 13th in the NFL. 7 of the guys before ahead of him had even less targets.

He has 500 yards and 4tds basically being forced touches and getting every possible opportunity.   He was the 8th best wr with lost of wr in front of him getting way less opportunity.   500 yards when thielen misses half the season and your second wr is an undrafted rookie (that did more with the opportunities) is not good.  It's bare minimum to not be thought of as a bust already.  Especially playing 5 years in college.
