When Guy and I finish, only one player, a receiver, remains on the field. Practice ended 20 minutes ago. Yet the player stays, catching hard passes from a short distance in weather hot enough to make a mannequin sweat.

You’re the last, I tell him when he finally finishes.

“Got to be,” wide receiver Kenneth Moore says.

Moore, who played at Charlotte Butler high, understands the joy of playing for the team you grew up cheering. He understands the importance of representing a school and a community. He realizes how tough it is to get on an NFL roster.

And regardless of where you’re from, he knows how difficult it is to stay.
