NOTES: Clausen quickly moving up the depth chart

Jimmy Clausen is movin' on up.

Clausen, the team's second-round draft pick, began taking reps with the second-team offense on Thursday ahead of Hunter Cantwell. It's unclear if things will remain that way moving forward. However, it's widely expected that Clausen will enter the season as the No. 2 quarterback behind Matt Moore, but the fact that he's taking snaps with the second team at this stage is a good sign when it comes to his progression.

Clausen came to the Panthers with a good working knowledge of the Panthers offense, having played in a similar system at Notre Dame.

Also Stuff on Edwards

EDWARDS LARNING: Every day is a learning process for Armanti Edwards, who played quarterback at Appalachian State but is making the transition to wide receiver with the Panthers. On Thusday Edwards got jammed at the line of scrimmage by aggressive second-year cornerback Captain Munnerlyn fand struggled to get off the line.

It was an eye-opener for Edwards.

"It's the first time that happened and I have to get used to getting off that jam," Edwards said. "He caught me off guard. I'll be ready next time."

Overall, Edwards is pleased with how things are going.

"I think I'm progressing pretty good,” he said. “I've got my plays down pat and as long as I stay focused and know my routes I'll do pretty good."

captain is the best jamming CB we have. it's a good thing he's getting edwards used to that kind of thing. i don't think that will hold edwards back much, though.

re: clausen....pretty much inevitable. he'd better be moving up that depth chart.

I wouldn't sleep on Cantwell. Clausen might take the #2 spot away from him (although one practice with the two's does not mean Clausen just got a permanent promotion) but he will still be way ahead of Pike and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he is still ahead of Pike when it's time to make cuts.

Do most people on this board think Cantwell is that bad? I mean, I didn't see him play much in college, but he seemed to play well during the preseason games.

his best play in the preseason was during a comeback against the profoundly talented 4th-string giants secondary, tying the game before throwing a game-losing interception that was returned for a touchdown
