the sad thing is that while jerry is trying to be the role-model and make his business more profitable in the long run, he may be biting himself in the ass. if he loses alot of talent after this season, and the team isnt as good, then he will be subjecting his business to lower profits if he doesnt sell as many tickets or merchandise.

there are two parts to running a successfull business. First, you have to save as much money as possible in order to be profitable, but at the same time, you also have to have a quality product so that you will have loyal customers. richardson seems to only be considering the first rule at the moment.

The Hornets made a mistake by not signing popular players like Mourning. The word was Shinn was cheap and not serious about a championship. Players didn't want to play here and fans lost interest. It didn't help Shinn couldn't keep it in his pants.

Still if Richardson follows up getting rid of a ton of veterans with a losing effort and then fails to sign many of the young core of players, he may be starting down the same path.

That is unfair to compare them as freshman & sophomore, because we didn't have the same O-Line by the time we got Stewart. Not to mention Fox was using Foster more than Williams. It not until we got Stewart, that Williams was being used more than ever beside sharing with Stewart. Thus, your comparsion there is weak & mooted.

And hopefully Williams will get paid. But he better not demand more than he should. He should accept the deal that will paid him well like $20 millions or maybe more.

Seriously, I've met this guy on a couple occasions and he's nothing but pure class. We're lucky to have a star on our team like this. As long as he stays healthy, I think we will extend him... he doesn't have the wear and tear of most RB's his age, he spent quite a few years at the beginning of his career riding the pine and he's spent these last few years in a 2-back system.

I don't see any of the players simply walking because they haven't been extended yet. As long as they are offered good/ fair contracts, am sure they will stay.

I can see how you might hope that is the case, but I can only say that based on what Williams said in that article he thinks he should already have been given a new contract, feels that the 30% rule is an excuse not a legitimate reason his contract hasn't been extended, and doesn't sound like he cares about where he plays so much as he wants to play football. I wouldn't be surprised if he went to the highest bidder regardless of where it was. Loyalty is rewarded when it is reciprocated. Nothing that Richardson has done has shown any loyalty to the players, so why would they do anything for the Panthers? After the CBA gets worked out I expect there to be lots of bruised feelings and egos about how the players were treated especially if they had to make big concessions. If Richardson is heavily involved in the negotitations it won't endear anyone to him on the player's side. I could see a scenario where a number of guys either are not extended or choose to go elsewhere for more money.

Steven Jackson got a 6 year- 49 million dollar deal in 2009 with 20 million guaranteed. Realistically it is 3 year deal worth 30 million. Williams will be looking at that as the standard and want as much. If Richardson doesn't pay him someone else surely will.

If it wasn't for this CBA nonsense he would have been paid.

As I have said before, JR is trying to lead the owners by not extending contracts and protect his business for possible lock-out.

We are possibly seeing the end of a lot of fan Favs in Charlotte. Davis/Kalil/Williams.

How would you feel if you had exceptional talent and your work refused to pay you because the owner wanted to make a point.

Richardson is also taking a long view. It's very possible that he knows he either gets to go to Davis/Kalil/Williams and say "I can now pay you this much, and no one else can really do better because of the new cap" or he gets to say "I can't pay you at all because I gave Williams that new contract and blew up my cap".

i wish i had more faith in JR, but i really beleive that the new salary cap will be about 20% lower that it was last year. that means we probably wont be able to sign all of our core guys with contracts coming up. since williams has stewart behind him, he unfortunately, may be more expendable than some of the other guys with alot of drop off at production behind them like kalil, or thomas davis.

Exactly. I understand what Richardson is doing but what will be the cost? These players aren't going to thank him for his stance since in the end it really is a prelude to battling with the players union anyway in an attempt to take away some of the money they currrently enjoy. When it is all said and done Richardson will be seen as a businessman who was self-serving and did what was best for himself despite any problems it caused for the team or the players.

Just as long as everyone remembers that each player sees themselves as a business as well and will do what it best for them regardless of how it effects the Panthers or the team. Any loyalty that players had for the Panthers or Richardson is being eroded away. Players will go elsewhere just because they feel that they were being disrespected by the organization.

He's always paid a full cap, and he's never been shy about opening his wallet up before. But suddenly he has been this year. It's likely that in the long run it will seem like genius, even though for now he looks like Scrooge. And Williams knows it's a business, as do all the players. He's smart enough to say the right things, and let his agent work out the details. Not all NFL players are.

i dont get what all the b*tching and moaning about contracts is about .. for a fun fact .. just about every starter in the NFL makes more than the president every year .. nobody needs a new contract .. its a game .. if you love it play it .. if its all about money do something worthwhile to earn it.. playing football doesnt help anybody survive , cure diseases or help the world make progress its a past time these are grown ass men they need to grow up..

He knows a lot about running a successful buisness of course. All of the owners do or they wouldn't have the millions of dollars it takes to buy a franchise. It doesn't mean they don't make mistakes and screw up. And it isn't like he ever ran a football organization before so he has no prior experience doing it. Running a chain of food restaurants isn't exactly the same as running a football franchise. And this year is totally uncharted waters for everyone. With both his sons gone and new management in place, you can't say that what he did before is any model for the future and things could be totally different. Looking around the league richardson is taking this to more of an extreme than most any owner I can see. He might know something or might be like most men in their 70s, too focused on security and unwilling to step out and take chances anymore. Heart attacks and bypass surgery change a man and his values. I saw it with my father who is also in his seventies. No he isn't rich like Richardson but it about more than money. Football being a young man's game may ultimately extend to the FO and ownership as well.

Seriously??? How do you feel if someone said why should you be bitching about your job. You make plenty more than mimimun wage. Millions of people make a lot less than you do and frankly billions of people went hungry today and you have plenty to eat. You should be darn happy just to have a job. Working is for the accomplishment of it and being productive not for the money.

Ya, that's what I was thinking, maybe trying to save a little money now to pay some big contracts that will definitely be coming.
