Joe Person: Panthers will let Eddy Pineiro test free agency, re-sign JJ Jansen

I liked Eddy but his lack of NFL leg power makes me wanna move on. Dude just didn't have enough power for anything much past 50 yards and I'd rather have a guy with that ability. He was super accurate when he wasn't hurt but I'm still upset about the DJ helmet game vs Atlanta 2 years ago.

Also I'm not a fan of how he held out of OTA's because he wanted a new contract and thought he should've been one of the highest paid kickers in the league. He's gonna get a rude awaking once the offers from other teams come in.

Honestly, I'd like to see Eddie come back, he's been more than reliable for us. They all miss kicks now and then and he's been better than most. However, there's probably a top end to pay for a kicker when you're rebuilding a team, so he could quickly get out of our price range.

If he goes elsewhere, good luck to him, he did right by us. And some other guy is going to get a shot at one of only 32 spots to do that job there are in the world. Good luck to that guy, too.

Edit to add: Wouldn't be the same without JJJ around here. Glad he will stay on, there's going to be a lot of new faces on special teams, we need that veteran presence.

Good thing we have a 7th round pick. 😉

The Huddle is very bad at analyzing kickers. They demanded Graham Gano be cut for years despite being a very good kicker for us, and among the most accurate in 2017 and 2018. Well, we cut him and the replacement, Joey Slye, is aggressively awful - consistently the worst full-time kicker in the league. Takes us years to find Piniero, who still isn't actually as good as Gano (who had three very, very good seasons with the Giants after we let him).

Basically, in the time that has been since we let Gano go, we still haven't found a kicker as good as him (Piniero is far worse beyond 50 than average, and 50+ kicks were an area Gano was good at), and Gano is somehow still in the league.

Finding good kickers is not easy.

I'm still not over we had Harrison Butker on the roster...

Well we had some All Pro we found named Harrison but let him go after drafting him….in the same year….before the preseason ended.
