Joe Person: Panthers will let Eddy Pineiro test free agency, re-sign JJ Jansen

With an asterisk for Bruce Matthews, JJ Jansen appears to already be the all time games played leader for a long snapper. Would like a to see a little more juice on punt team though. He’s valuable because he knows special teams the rule book inside and out but he was a little late to the corner a couple times last season. Glad to have him and his experience back though.

edit: also Eddie basically said this in his post season wrap up interview, not really a surprise.

Honestly, I'd like to see Eddie come back, he's been more than reliable for us. They all miss kicks now and then and he's been better than most. However, there's probably a top end to pay for a kicker when you're rebuilding a team, so he could quickly get out of our price range.

If he goes elsewhere, good luck to him, he did right by us. And some other guy is going to get a shot at one of only 32 spots to do that job there are in the world. Good luck to that guy, too.

Edit to add: Wouldn't be the same without JJJ around here. Glad he will stay on, there's going to be a lot of new faces on special teams, we need that veteran presence.

They aren't as replaceable as us fans like to think because we've lost a lot of games because of missed kicks.

The Huddle is very bad at analyzing kickers. They demanded Graham Gano be cut for years despite being a very good kicker for us, and among the most accurate in 2017 and 2018. Well, we cut him and the replacement, Joey Slye, is aggressively awful - consistently the worst full-time kicker in the league. Takes us years to find Piniero, who still isn't actually as good as Gano (who had three very, very good seasons with the Giants after we let him).

Basically, in the time that has been since we let Gano go, we still haven't found a kicker as good as him (Piniero is far worse beyond 50 than average, and 50+ kicks were an area Gano was good at), and Gano is somehow still in the league.

Finding good kickers is not easy.

Agreed.  We haven't had a great kicker since Gano, and maybe as far back as Kasay.  We almost had one in Butker, but the front office at that time made some questionable moves.

    • Yeah, good luck with that.
    • Andy is good for Bryce, and was probably instrumental in his development. He is certainly the ONLY friend version 1.0  had in the entire state. He’s cheap, a mentor, and can at least still throw a good ball. He’s a backup, accepts the role, and has amassed valuable knowledge.  Does anyone legit think that there will be ANY semblance of a QB competition come training camp? Bryce 2.0 is THE starter, unquestioned, at least through the end of next season. Bro hung a 40 burger, winning in OT, in the house where the Panthers, every season, invent new ways to lose. 2006 (tie, scored 44) and 1998 (scored 51) were the ONLY other games, in Panthers history, where this point total was either met or surpassed. Those squads were pretty stacked with Panthers’ all time offensive greats.  Bryce’s team featured Chuba, 3 rookies, 2 veteran nobodies at TE, and Thielen. His previous visit to the dome… he got smashed, embarrassed, and looked like he had no business playing a grown ass man’s game. As abysmal as the team was last season, that game was arguably the best win the Panthers have ever had in the dome. If someone else could have done it, it would have been done many times over by now, but it hasn’t been. I’m no Bryce homer and dished dirt on his game like few others, but you can’t just fade that off as a nothing. It was significant, and only the stiffest detractors feel otherwise. There is no QB competition.
    • that is all he said--then they had the Panthers taking Walker.
