2011 Prospects: Safety's

Safety could become our #1 need in next years draft if Charles Godfrey/Sherrod Martin do not pan out at SS or FS.

No way in heel I'd give up a first rounder for Deunte. If he is available when we pick in the third than I'm all for it.

Also has Will Hill done anything. I remember him being a five star athlete out of high school, but I didn't keep track of his progress. I know he wasn't better than Major Wright last year and he wasn't anything special.

I go to UNC and went to every game last year. Yeah he does have big play ability. But like the rest of the UNC secondary he gets caught up trying to make the big play too many times. I remember having to stick up for him on numerous occasions because he blew his covergae. He will be better than any other UNC secondary player, because I personally think Burney gets lucky on his interceptions (see Miami game those balls were terribly underthrown) and don't even get me started on Charles Brown he is god-awful. Brown gave up a bunch of touchdowns last year against not that great wide-recievers.

It really depends on how Deunte develops. If he had come out this year he would definitely been no earlier than a third round pick. If we had a second rounder (which we don't traded to New England for Armanti pick) I might take him in the second. But in the first? We may have more pressing needs at corner next year(Richard Marshall leaving) and d-line depth. Barring injuries our safeties seem to be ok. I say wait til at the earliest the third round to get what's going to probably be a backup safety.

Oh and I forgot to add the UNC secondary is way overhyped. Our d-line and linebacker corp is so good that offenses are more worried about getting the ball out, or blocking our front seven on running plays to care about our secondary. The secondary gets a lot of the glory but the front seven is what does a lot of the work.

But maybe I'm biased because I am overly critical of my favorite teams.

P.S. While I'm trying not to contradict myself and stay realistic. Deunte could be heading for a break-out year. When he came to UNC he was recruited to play wide-reciever. However, after injuries and the combination of Brandon Tate and Hakeem Nicks he didn't get much playing time. He converted to safety and has only had two real years of playing it. He has an NFL ready body and could be great. If this happens though another team will probably draft him before the Panthers just because I don't see it as a big need.

he rotated with Wright, and had 42 tackles and 1 pass break up. he'll be starting this year though. another thing...also may be biased, but if we do need a safety(probably a SS) Mark Barron should be our 1st round pick if he comes out...although if we took DeAndre McDaniel, who I think is almost as good/as good as Eric Berry, I wouldnt mind at all.

Interesting. 2nd-3rd is the highest I've seen LeGree projected so far. If he can avoid getting off to the slow start like he had last season I could see him going higher, but at this point I'd be surprised if he gets drafted anywhere above the 5th or 6th round.

I'm a huge UNC. Williams has the size/speed combo that the NFL covets in modern safeties. If he has a good season and runs in the mid-4.4s at the Combine, he probably does go in the 1st. However, before I start asking for a 1st round safety, I want to see what our current guys can do.

The UNC defensive prospect that has me drooling is Bruce Carter. That guy's FREAK! He is going to rocket up draft boards this year. Just wait, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's the first LB taken. I'll also mention DE Robert Quinn, but that guy's a top 5 pick. I hope to God we're not in a position to draft Quinn.

The UNC prospect to keep an eye on is WR Greg Little. His draft stock is completely up in the air. I think he could go anywhere from late 1st through the 3rd. He has ideal size and strength, but his stock will greatly depend on his 40 time. I wouldn't be surprised to see him run in the 4.6 range and slip. If that happens, we should be looking hard.
