So I have decided to order a custom Alienware computer.

I think of it like cars. You pay a hefty premium for a new car just as you do for a bleeding edge computer. Buy a car that's a couple years old and the savings are tremendous. Lets say you pay 2K for a machine that lasts 6 years but pay 1K for something that lasts 5 years. Was that 1 year worth it?

I just don't think that's a correct analogy though... I've had both really high end and mediocre computers. The mediocre ones seem to go downhill a whole lot faster than the really high end ones... I think your analogy would be a lot closer to reality at like 2K/6 years, 1K/3 years.

Well you're talking about the quality of a product. I'm talking about buying the same exact product a year later.

There's some guys on here that can list you everything you want, link it to you from tigerdirect or newegg so you can just build your own i7 for much cheaper than an alienware.

The only way to get an i7 cheaper is to find a refurb or prebuilt on sale, which does happen.

I'm not one of those dudes though because that's just too much work for me to do for free.

Because a lot of the stuff I have is outdated. I'm using a geforce 7950 GX2, which is a dinosaur by GPU standards. Most games I can still play, but with a number of them I can only run them on low or medium settings.

I have a 2.8 GHZ Pentium 4 and an 8600 GTX. I feel your pain. I can barely even run modern games now. Mass Effect 2 plays but it rapes my processor.
