Steve Smith's going to be on nfl network tonight

Steve Smith is the man. Awesome interview. My take on what he said is the man is very happy and content with the Panthers, and his role here. He's going to enjoy the rest of his career. Which is what he needs. He needs to have more fun out on the field. It'll be a good thing all away around.

Everything from the interview was good. He has come along way, and will continue to become even a better leader than he's been.

I'm glad that Smitty is happy with the amount of money he's making but I wish we would add about 3-4 years to his contract to make sure he retires as Panther. I can't imagine having to watch him play for another team.

When I played ball, I'd get fired up and pissed off on the field just like Smitty. All off-season between junior and senior year, I was telling guys in the weight room how I apologized for being a more or less fiery dickhead on gamedays, and talked until I was blue in the face about how I was more relaxed and how I wouldn't do that anymore during the upcoming season. On the 2nd play of the 2nd offensive series our 1st year varsity sophomore WR screwed up a route that caused a pick-6. All that off-season bs I was talking instantly went out the window right then.

I only bring that story up because some guys can't help it on the football field. Steve can talk all day about passing the torch and being relaxed, but on Sundays, Smitty will be Smitty, and that's a good thing for us as fans.

Last year Steve was the most relaxed than he's ever been

He might get fired up on gameday, but thats where it stops

Dont get me wrong I love Steve Smith... he is my favorite Panther of all time without a doubt. I do believe however, we are witnessing a new version Smith. I think that broken arm and last year's disappointing season really hit him both literally and emotionally. Steve has always been one of the best not just because of his physical tools, but because of his want and absolute desire to be the best. That is why he gets angry after the Bucs game, thats why he punched Ken Lucas, and thats why he saved Jake's ass so many times.... he was immersed in competition to be the best guy out there.

Now he realizes that the game for him doesn't have to be about individual statistics and awards (he even admitted that) and also says he wants to essentially move on in his life both football wise (become something of a more productive veteran reciever) and in his family life.

As a fan of Steve Smith this is all fine and dandy and I can see a clear level of maturation. As a Panthers fan I'm a tad worried. We might not have to worry about Steve punching teammates or complaining about not getting his touches, but we almost might not get that super drive he used to have. Our hopes might be riding on Armanti Edwards. If he can't be that explosive guy for us, I don't know if Steve has that left in him mentally...... dear god I hope this isn't true.

Granted sometimes Steve has been known to be tempermental. One minute he is happy and joking, the next minute he is pissed. It was a tough season and has been a tough offseason for him as well. Maybe he is starting to feel like giving up. But I know Steve Smith and I am hoping that when he steps out onto that field on Sundays all this number one reciever crap goes out the window and that competive drive fuels his engine once again.

I wouldn't worry about him being more mature & less angry when he is playing on the field from his interview affecting him playing on the field. He is usually calm & laidback along with making jokes when he isn't playing. But when he is playing on the field, he is still fiery & do what he can to help us win. Glad he is still here since I have the replica jersey of his numbers.

That's pure competiton. To say Smitty is in the wrong to get fired up while playing is the same as making judgements about soldiers in war.

There are no aplogies to be made and to think there are shows our society has become wayyyy to soft.

I still go out and play football w friends. Throughout the game I'm talkin trash. If its not a receiver, I'm trying to get the QB to throw a pick by getting in his head. If he throws 1, I try for 2. If I'm being defended on a route and burn the guy, he for sure is going to hear about it. I want my opponent to think about what they are doing. Challenging people to step up usually accomplishes that and mistakes start to happen.

I would never in my life expect Smitty to calm down.

IMO I think Smith just wants what he and moose had in 03. He wants another WR to be successful and in turn make him have a great season by being successful. I did notice though that Smith did not come right out and say Matt Moore is his QB. Looks like clauson will be given the chance to win the starting QB role.
