Steve Smith's going to be on nfl network tonight

Dont get me wrong I love Steve Smith... he is my favorite Panther of all time without a doubt. I do believe however, we are witnessing a new version Smith. I think that broken arm and last year's disappointing season really hit him both literally and emotionally. Steve has always been one of the best not just because of his physical tools, but because of his want and absolute desire to be the best. That is why he gets angry after the Bucs game, thats why he punched Ken Lucas, and thats why he saved Jake's ass so many times.... he was immersed in competition to be the best guy out there.

Now he realizes that the game for him doesn't have to be about individual statistics and awards (he even admitted that) and also says he wants to essentially move on in his life both football wise (become something of a more productive veteran reciever) and in his family life.

As a fan of Steve Smith this is all fine and dandy and I can see a clear level of maturation. As a Panthers fan I'm a tad worried. We might not have to worry about Steve punching teammates or complaining about not getting his touches, but we almost might not get that super drive he used to have. Our hopes might be riding on Armanti Edwards. If he can't be that explosive guy for us, I don't know if Steve has that left in him mentally...... dear god I hope this isn't true.

Granted sometimes Steve has been known to be tempermental. One minute he is happy and joking, the next minute he is pissed. It was a tough season and has been a tough offseason for him as well. Maybe he is starting to feel like giving up. But I know Steve Smith and I am hoping that when he steps out onto that field on Sundays all this number one reciever crap goes out the window and that competive drive fuels his engine once again.

I don't think you have to worry about his passion on the field. Once he steps on the field he will be the same fiery guy that we have become used too.

Sounds like he has it all figured out though. I bet he will play 3-4 years more then retire a Panther.

Well I agree there is a change in his intensisity. But as we saw in the Vikings game, when Smith wants to destroy some one he's out for blood and I don't think that will ever change. However Smith does seem like he's maturing and wising up on his play a bit. It might actually extend his career, going balls to the walls every second every play is going to wear him down. Personally I think he's just finding a balance to that not, not only in football but in life. Not saying that Smith is going to pull a Peppers but he won't have to carry the team on his back anymore with Edwards, LaFell, double trouble, Matt Moore, etc.

What do you guys take from this interview?? Cuz it sounds to me like he's either gonna retire or leave Carolina when his contract is up.

I actually got a slightly different feeling from the interview. I got the impression that he just plans on having fun and enjoying the last years of his prime in his illustrious career. I believe he is not interested in forcing the issue and trying to maintain being "the man" as he stated and is more content to come out, work hard, have fun, and be a role model and teacher to the young receivers who are blessed to get a chance to learn from him. Also got the impression that he will retire a panther, but not at the end of his current contract. I think he will seek one more extension but won't force the issue on a huge payday. He's an established family man who's been a panther his entire career. I doubt he'll want to move everything for a final 2-3 years somewhere else.

The minute he gets late hit, mouthed off towards, poor play calling he will start yelling. If he wants to calm down as a person good for him; it will probably improve the quality of his life...But on the field I doubt he can put out that fire that burns within.
