European Football Questions

Recommended Posts

After I graduate college in 2012, my father and I have planned for a while now to head across the Atlantic and explore Europe for a month or so. It will be the first time any of us have gone there. Since we are German, a couple weeks will be dedicated to visiting Hessheim, outside of Frankfurt, where our family has its roots.

Aside from this, it would be amazing to attend Eurocup 2012 which is taking place in Poland and the Ukraine. Was just wondering if anyone has taken part in spectating a huge scale sporting event such as this? What can you do to ensure your safety? I'm particularly worried about time in the Ukraine. How to acquire tickets? Cheapest place to dine and sleep? On a side note, by this time I'll be almost fluent in German and I have blond hair and blue eyes. I don't think either of us would stand out as a foreigner.

Thank you, go Bayern Munchen!

I was in Germany for the 2006 World Cup. Its an experience you won't forget.

In Poland, as long as you don't have a car to be stolen, you're good. I never made it to the Ukraine so I can't help. But take the standard steps you would take anywhere there is a massive influx of tourists: watch for pickpockets mostly, avoid unlit areas at night, learn the public transportation systems, use only licensed taxis, don't leave your drinks unattended, don't flash money, etc

You don't have to worry so much about looking like a tourist in Germany. That town is near Mannheim, where everyone is either American or involved with the US military.

Ukraine is alright. As long as you don't start anything with anybody you will be fine. There will be millions of tourists during euro cup so you don't have to worry much. Do not cary your wallet in your back packet (will be stolen by gypsies 100% guaranteed). Avoid any games and lotteries they might be offering you, it's a scam. Try their national vodka (called horilka).

Let me know if you have any other questions.
