Q: When you look at the two quarterbacks who played in this year’s Super Bowl, what stands out to you about Drew Brees and Peyton Manning?

A: He gets the ball out so fast—Drew Brees—even with a great pass rush, you still can’t get to him. If you do get a rush on him, Brees is really good at scrambling. Whereas Peyton really doesn’t want to scramble; he really doesn’t want to move. That’s the thing: You’ve gotta get hits on him, no matter how many plays you get out there.

Q: When you watched the Super Bowl, how badly did you want to be playing in it?

A: Badly. That’s any stage of anybody’s career—whether it’s your first game or last game—whether you’re a 12-year veteran or, in Brett (Favre’s) case, a 20-year vet. You know, just making it to the Super Bowl is what everybody plays for.

Q: What do you have to do individually, and what do the Carolina Panthers have to do as a team, to reach that ultimate goal?

A: Remain productive. Me and Jonathan (Stewart) back there at the running back position—and our overall running game—the wide receivers blocking, the O-line continuing to keep the big guys off of us … I think we’re going to keep the nucleus of our team. Our defense has to step up and continue to get us turnovers, stop guys from driving down the field and converting on third down, to get us the ball in our hands. And we have to have the ability to get the ball in the end zone.

Q: Do you foresee many more changes to the Panthers over the course of this offseason?

A: I don’t know and I don’t want to predict, speculate or listen to any of the talking heads. I’ll know when it happens, when we report back [for] minicamps and OTAs—all that good stuff. I know that the guys on the team are the guys they chose, the guys they believe in and the guys I think can perform the way that they think they can.

Q: Talk about the competitiveness of your division last season. How tough was the NFC South to play in last year?

A: Well, it’s always been tough. We just haven’t had the media attention like some of the other divisions. So I think the Saints winning the Super Bowl kind of put the spotlight on us a little bit … because they came out of our division.

Q: When I visited Carolina Panthers training camp last summer, I saw you jetting around the campus on a motorized scooter. Do you still ride the scooter?

A: Believe it or not, my scooter that I had the past two years broke down on me! I went back the very same day and got another scooter. It’s the same type and same model, but a different color. I love riding it because with all the walking to and from practice and in between, it gets you off your legs.
