Marvel vs DC

funnily enough, Choi/Oback use no inking. he does pencil sketches, and she colors them. husband and wife team.

this is a huge image, but it shows his drawing and then what she does with it. it's really all about the color.

Sounds about right. The crayons person never gets the credit they deserve.

Those are both pretty flawless in both aspects. The pencils are a little simple, but they're clean and perfectly proportioned. Plus you don't want all those squiggly lines destroying the true art, which are the colors and shading.

Going back to Deadpool, when he was originally created, he was just a ripoff of the DC villain Deathstroke, a Teen Titans enemy. His unique personality came later.

i wouldn't say ripoff, i think it was intended as some kind of tongue-in-cheek homage. i mean their names are slade wilson and wade wilson. surely he can't be that blatant without trying to be funny right?

I have not bought any comics in a long time but who is the best artist now? I always loved McFarlanes work back in the day.

I am.

J. Scott Campbell is probably one of one of the top 5.

But my all time favorite is Kev Walker. Did a lot of Games Workshop and Magic the Gathering stuff, but is under an exclusive contract with Marvel now.

This image is the one that keeps motivating me; keeps me drawing. Pretty much perfect in my book.

i understand having references like Land to an extent. i'm sure every comic artist is always looking through magazines and photos for posing ideas and anatomical references for expressions.

when you don't have references you get Liefeld, who can't draw feet and whose women somehow can show a head-on view of both of their breasts and their ass at same time.

women have always been a problem with comic artists, something to do with a lack of first hand experience methinks.

I think J. Scott Campbell has it down. His women are heavily stylized, but based on a strong foundation of understanding of human anatomy. I modeled my female face technique after his style; not a total ripoff, but strong influence.

Edit:

Of course what I like best about him is that he is a student of the medium. He understands how a character has evolved over time stylistically. I think he puts a lot more effort into his craft than the average artist.
