Marvel vs DC

I just think the industrialized comic industry is a waste of time.

The same characters being plugged into the same situations. Totally bores me. And as it's been said, new writers come in with their own ideas and totally reshape characters, and storylines, now it's just a big mishmash of different origin stories, alternate universes, and retcons in a vain attempt to keep them somewhat connected.

I don't blame the writers, though. If I worked for Marvel, I'd probably get stuck working on Hulk, or something I don't even care about. And the work would suffer. All the while I'd just be waiting for the opportunity to come up with the characters and stories I'd want to do.

I think comics need to be done on the independant level for a while. Fresh faces with new ideas that the creator came up with and cares about. The industry has no passion anymore.

if you want to get back into them, the thing i'd recommend reading is Planet Hulk and World War Hulk. written by Greg Pak. it's just fantastically written.

Planet Hulk... Hulk is too dangerous, and they can't kill him, so the Avenger types decide they have to trick him into being launched into space. he lands on a populated planet and lots of interesting stuff happens.

World War Hulk... Hulk makes it back to Earth and fugs poo the fug up.

i'm not a fan. i like super heroes. comics are a nostalgic thing to me. Garth Ennis was good on Punisher, but i think everything he does is the same. "i hate superhero stories, look how gritty and porny i can make this instead."

gritty and porny is fun, but i don't like his style.

Something really bothers me about that cover. Can't put my finger on it.

One thing is the face sucks. Looks like something I drew in the margins of my lined paper during class then crossed out. I'll give the penciller the benefit of the doubt though. It may have been fugged up in inking or painting.

But the body proportions are wierd too. He just seems flat. His upper body is too narrow (front-to-back, not side-to-side). I think his abdominals should be sticking out more. Again I can't really nail down what's bugging me, but I'm not a huge fan of that one.

he's thin, he has flat muscles. more of a swimmer build than a liefeld 'muscles on muscles' build. the face is fine, that's what the guy looks like.

i think what makes it look off is that there is no arch in the back like there should be in that pose.

That's it! There's no arch in the back! He looks like he just had a stubby torso.

I don't have a problem with the musculature. Huge muscles were a 90s trend, back when Ah-nahld was still relevant in Hollywood. I got no problem with that; I like the lean muscular look, now. By flat, I mean, he doesn't jump off the page. He looks 2D; flat. And the reason is the pose is weird.

yeah, he was obviously going for an emotional arching up toward the sky pose. but he didn't arch the back so it looks like a rigid torso put onto some legs at a weird angle.

he's usually very careful about anatomy, at least that's the impression i get from his blog.
