Clausen and the Problem of Picking Second-Round Quarterbacks

I think this article was right on (although he missed Tarvaris Jackson). The author wrote one about first round picks a few weeks ago. There's a pretty compelling argument - especially if you add Jackson I don't think he's trying to say that you shouldn't pick a QB in the second round....just that they haven't provided value. Coaches have a short leash on them and then they get itchy to draft a guy really high the next chance they get.

And, a lot of people here have been complaining that the author made an "excuse" to justify his argument - that Brees was only succesful after he left the team that drafted him. It does matter. This about the value the Chargers got for Brees.....which was very little. They may not have known it when they drafted Rivers, but the Chargers had a quarterback that just needed to develop a bit more....in fact, he had a great year the year they drafted Rivers. But, the Chargers were antsy (of course, it worked out).

Maybe some of these second round busts would work out with a little patience.

Because most QB's taken in the other rounds have a much higher % of becoming franchise QB's.

This article is stupid. The chance that a QB becomes a franchise QB is very low regardless. How about looking at all the undrafted QB's in the past 10 years and how many of those became franchise QB's.
