The takeaway from the list of QB's is that it IS a total crap shoot.

Now you udnerstand why Fox and Co never wanted to take a QB with a 1st rd pick. Lock up tons of money with a very high bust rate.

Thats true, but the reward is huge when it actually works out

lol.

I see about 18 QB's on there I would deem "OK." I see about 6-8 that are pretty damn good.

Is it just me or has there been more success with 1st round QB's lately (according to this)?

Lately you are correct.

sry to say, but nobody cares and you have wasted ur time

I cared, which is why I looked it up. As slow as the board has been lately, I figured I would post it and see what discussion it generated.

lotta washouts there. But I'm sticking with the theory that between the three QBs we have on our roster the odds are very good that we have our franchise QB. If that's the case, all three of them were worth it.

I kind of agree with this. And given that Moore has already performed well I'm inclined to think he's got the best chance of being the guy. If Clausen is, I think he has the tools to be VERY good. But a lot of the guys on the list had tools just as good and washed out. I'm crossing my fingers for the kid though, if he pops then it's very good for the Panthers.

Here's some perspective. Cyberjag wanted Turgovac back after the 3rd game of the preseason last year.

Yeah, and after the first couple of games too. Meeks' defense was awful early on, and Trgovac's had, by comparison, thoroughly outperformed it. But over time Meeks' defense got better, where traditionally Trgovac's got worse. I'm pretty happy with how things turned out.

wow thanks for bringing all this to my attention i had no idea that those players were drafted

Did you know that the Bleacher Report will pay you to write articles for them? :)

For what it's worth, I think that the following are the only guys who were really worth their draft selection. And this is just my opinion, which, as several posters here will gleefully point out, isn't worth a lot. :)

Brett Favre, 1991 2nd round pick, number 32 overall

Drew Bledsoe, 1993 1st round pick, number 1 overall

Kerry Collins, 1995 1st round pick, number 5 overall

Jake Plummer, 1997 2nd round pick, number 42 overall

Peyton Manning, 1998 1st round pick, number 1 overall

Donovan McNabb, 1999 1st round pick, number 2 overall

Daunte Culpepper, 1999 1st round pick, number 11 overall

Chad Pennington, 2000 1st round pick, number 18 overall

Michael Vick, 2001 1st round pick, number 1 overall

Drew Brees, 2001 2nd round pick, number 32 overall

Carson Palmer, 2003 1st round pick, number 1 overall

Byron Leftwich, 2003 1st round pick, number 7 overall

Philip Rivers, 2004 1st round pick, number 4 overall

Ben Roethlisberger, 2004 1st round pick, number 11 overall

Aaron Rodgers, 2005 1st round pick, number 24 overall

Matt Ryan, 2008 1st round pick, number 3 overall

Joe Flacco, 2008 1st round pick, number 18 overall

That's 17 players out of 68 taken in the past 20 years. So figure a 25% shot that Clausen works out. Given the upside, I'll take those odds and trust in the coaching staff.

nice research. I guarantee you did more work getting that last then John "I tuck my rattail into my tuxedo" clayton has done on 50% of his articles. that being said, what Jake Plummer did 13 years ago has absolutly no impact on how good Clausen is on 3rd and long when a D-End is in his face. Round drafted is completely irrelevant once you step onto the field

Man, I can't believe I was that close by just glancing at the list.

Not really true. Look up where Brady and Brees were drafted (and they're not the only examples).

Brees: 1st pick in the second round...33 overall..while not a 1st rounder, he was drafted very high.

Is Brady elite? sure.

Is it normal to find a great QB that late in the draft: Certainly not.

You have to draft QB's early if you want to find truely great ones.

Yes, you can find a Brady or a Romo every now and then, but it does not happen enough, to IMO run a franchise that way.

I agree.

Yes, there are plenty of busts drafted early. But at the same time, most of the league's elite quarterbacks were taken in the first couple of rounds. I think it's a gamble, but obviously one that will pay dividends if you hit upon the right guy.

Here's another interesting view of the QB position. There are 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL.

18 were taken in the first round

4 were taken in the second

1 in the third

2 in the fourth, sixth, and seventh

3 were undrafted

So basically, you have about a one in four shot of your QB sticking if you take him in the first two rounds, but if you want a quality starter you just about half to take him in the first. or get lucky...

CyberJag contributes quite a bit in this forum, usually through very well-researched and well-written posts about the Panthers.

You, on the other hand, make posts about Madden, player websites, and your bets to wear a Romo shirt with a Cowboys fan.

I'd say by the responses thus far that many people -- including yourself, apparently -- care about the discussion at hand.

This has always been my point.

You can find a starter outside of the 1st, it's just really really rare.
