Kid sings Lady Gaga "Papparazzi" in talent contest

Saying lady gaga is talented because most other pop stars aren't is like saying I'm a really tall guy because I'm in a room full of midgets. She's a pop star, nothing more. She's not talentless but let's not get carried away here. Wow she can play the piano, she uses scales....wow..... congratulations - you're average. Don't think it takes anything to make 'catchy' music, get on my horse is catchy but no one is saying that guy is talented.

If she didn't dress crazy and go by some weird name she'd be nothing different than the thousands of other semi-talented people out there trying to make it big. I came to the realization long ago that talent has nothing to do with success in the music industry.

gaga ooo la la - yeah she's the second coming of Beethoven.

This is more true than people realize. Gimmicks sell, I can give myriad examples.

Metal bands that wear masks and costumes- Slipknot, Mushroomhead etc

Joke bands- ICP, Limp Bizkit

ALL Emo bands

Rob Zombie

Local bands- Truckstop Preachers, Avett Brothers

Unfortunately these days stage show/image is almost as important as talent and music. So it's no surprise Gaga is so popular

This thread is proof that when it comes to art in any form ultimately its a completely subjective matter. Lady Gaga, Jackson Pollock, Phillip Glass, Johann Strauss, Dennis Miller, Truman Capote, ect... For everyone who loves their work you'll find two more who will disagree.

same as it ever was...

But this thread(or what it has turned into) isn't about who enjoys her music, it's about whether she's a talented musician. Musicians that aren't all that talented can still make enjoyable music. I find it difficult to enjoy music from people I don't think are very talented but still can from time to time.

Define for me if you can in objective, quantifiable, and measurable terms a talented musician. Don't give me names because thats opinion. Give me metrics by which other musicians can be judged.

You cant. Its art and in this case beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

Doesn't mean you have to like it, but you also cant dismiss it simply because it doesn't suit your tastes.

OK, here is a test. Has there even been a time when you had to wonder whether or not a new song you were listening to was by Lady Gaga?

I know I haven't, because it's the same goddamned song over and over and over again with different lyrics!!! It all sounds the same. Same beat, same tempo, same sound effects, same rhythm, same crescendo in the same place every time.

She sucks. The only reason she is known is because of how she is packaged.

Well there are long standing metrics in jazz, such as if you can improvise over Giant Steps, but overall you're right, there's no definitive way to measure talent. My point is that talent and personal tastes are different things and I'm not saying she doesn't have much talent simply because I don't like her music.

If your wife thinks someone like Charlie Parker is a talentless hack, then that's just ignorance. I think Chick Corea is a incredibly talented musician yet I don't really like a lot of his music.
