Nightmares over wreck we saw

We went to MB over the weekend for bike week to see some friends. Saturday, we were on our way from MB up 17 to a campground where a friend has his bus. Ty was driving, and I was riding shotgun. Chris was in the back with Ty's friend.

I don't know if y'all are familiar with where the Giant Crab restaurant is, but that's where the wreck happened. I had just told Ty to really watch traffic and be careful. It was around 5 pm.

All of a sudden, we see a car pull out of the giant crab into traffic and shoes flying over into the far right north lane. A kid on a sport bike ran into the car. He never even had time to slow down. We were the first on the scene other than his buddies he was riding with. We were so close, Ty barely had time to stop and couldn't get in the center lane all the way. Chris and I hopped out and ran to help. I made Ty and his friend stay in the car.

Anyway, the kid was lying in the back seat of the car. An elderly man was driving his wife. All the kid kept saying was "I'm fuged". He was military, and wasn't wearing long sleeves or pants; just a tank top and shorts. His clothing was the least of his worries, though.

Some dumb bitch riding with the group ran around was trying to get his helmet off. I started yelling at her to leave him alone. One of his buddies flipped his visor up, and OMG. It was terrible. Blood was pouring out of his eyes. The kid was totally freaking out. He lifted his shirt, and what we saw was worse than his eyes. Keep in mind he went through the window to land in the back seat. I will never get that sight out of my mind and won't go into details on his stomach and sides.

The cop showed up and was trying to get the kid to calm down. We left once the EMT's arrived so we wouldn't be in the way. Went straight to our friend's camp and I hit the vodka.

I cannot get the kid out of my mind. I don't know if he survived or not. I can't find any info at all. I'm pretty sure he was out of Camp Lejeune.

I have never seen a bad accident. But I did dream about one once. When I was about 13 or 14, had just moved back to Columbia and we were staying with friends. I was sleeping in the daughters room,(she was not there at the time) and I woke up screaming her name. We were never really close friends, just acquaintances. Didn't remember why, but I knew something bad had happened in the dream. Didn't think much about it and forgot it...About 2 years later she was in a single car accident and was killed. I have always wondered if I dreamt about her death.

I have had more bad dreams about the close calls I've been in...

Reason why I won't ride a bike. If it's really bugging you go see a therapist, if it's not that bad you'll be over it.

I know exactly where that intersection is, been a lot of accidents there. That boy was lucky in one way. He went through the window! I'm retired FF/EMT and I've seen some that were not that lucky. One hit right above the window and shoved the roof half way across the top of the car with his head. It made a big V shape in the roof. Another one caught the B post and bent it in against the drivers seat which was pushed over against the passengers seat. Both were still alive when they were flown out but didn't survive. I've seen so many bike vs car that I can't remember them all but I can remember the two that were the bikes fault.

A guy crossed the street from my place of employment Saturday night trying to cross Savannah Hwy got stuck in the median(6 lane hwy) and a car crossed the line doing about 60 or 70 the poor SOB was killed instantly body parts everywhere and a ton of blood. 12th person killed crossing the street in the past 6 years....When a person gets hit that hard it sounds like a shotgun. I felt bad for the dudes wife she was with him but didnt get hit they still havent caught the guy who did it.

Yeah, the man was pulling out of the giant crab, across traffic, to go north. The kid was riding in the left lane going south. Kudos to my son for not freaking out. He stayed calm until we got ready to leave. He then got in the back seat for Chris to drive. He has his permit, but not his license - won't get it until Sept.

The kid was actually lucky he wasn't decapitated. And that he was wearing a helmet.

The bike was totally destroyed. Not much left of it at all. He went in through the back driver's side window, as best we could tell. If he'd have been flipped into traffic, he'd have been ran over for sure. (That happened on the bypass a couple of years ago during fall bike week.)

My brother has had two wrecks that were cars pulling out in front of him. The first one, he was stuck in the side window and the old bitch dragged him about almost a block before stopping. The second time, car sideswiped him into a turning lane. He never laid the bike down in that accident.

Mel...trust me on this one...go get some help. There is nothing wrong with it, it don't mean your weak or anything like that. I am sure if you go to your local firehall/paramedic station or the police station and tell them what you saw and did etc, they would have some sort of grief counselling/debrief. It's worth it.

One of the last calls I took as a volunteer was the accidental hanging of a 6 year old girl. It killed me almost...I couldn't sleep, I couldn't concentrate on anything all I kept seeing was that little girl hanging from her own playset in her own yard from her own scarf. She looked exactly like my own little girl, which doesn't help either. I can't remember ever bawling as much as I did that day and for a few days beyond!

You can listen to all the advice you want from the fine folks here, but honestly, go talk to someone, even if it is a cop or a fireman at the station when you go. They know how to talk to you and to listen etc.

About 10 years ago, I saw a guy on a bike get hit by another car. Not really sure how it happened, but I just saw the guy go flying and hit the curb. Died once he hit the ground. Honestly one of the worst things I've ever experienced, blood and bike/car parts all over the place. Road was closed down for the rest of the day for clean-up.

Will never get a bike/will never be a passenger on one/and will never let my kids get one (if have any)

It won't stop me from riding. I won't ever take a bike to a rally, though.

Funny though, a wreck happened right in front of us at the hooters in front of the mall 2 years ago during bbw when Chris was helping boogie lites. Guy and a girl on a bike, neither wearing helmets. The girl really looked bad, road rash all over her. The guy was tending to her and didn't look all that hurt. He's the one that later died in the hospital, we found out at the next rally. Never can tell.

It's in the sun news under multiple wrecks (2) or something like that. I keep checking for updates. That they haven't mentioned any fatal wrecks is a good thing.

No idea. He hit hard enough to knock his shoes off. He couldn't have been doing more than 35 -40, though. Traffic was too heavy. Plus, they were riding in a group.
