Carolina Panthers

Starter: Matt Moore

Competitor: Jimmy Clausen

Moore headed into the offseason under the impression that he was the Panthers' quarterback of the future after the team dumped Jake Delhomme at the start of free agency.

However, after an unexpected turn of events on draft day, the team has created competition at the position with the selections of Clausen and Tony Pike. Though both rookies will get plenty of reps during camp, Clausen's draft position and talent makes him the most likely challenger to Moore for the team's starting quarterback position.

Clausen, who was selected with the 48th overall pick after a stellar three-year career at Notre Dame, steps into a system that is very similar to the scheme he played in under Charlie Weis, and he enjoys the luxury of serving as a game manager in the Panthers offense. With a strong running game, stout offensive line and a dynamic No. 1 receiver in place, Clausen could thrive as the director of this offense. He has the arm strength to make all of the requisite throws, and his accuracy rates as one of the strengths of his game.

Although Moore remains unheralded on the national scene, he has quickly developed into a star-quality player in the minds of scouts and coaches within the organization. He efficiently runs the offense by cleverly picking apart a defense with an assortment of short and intermediate throws, but he is more than a "small-ball" passer. Moore gets the ball out of his hands quickly and has enough arm strength to stretch the field on deep throws. More importantly, he is a winner with the moxie to lead his team to wins.

Given Moore's 6-2 career record and his proven leadership skills and intangibles, it is high unlikely that Clausen will make a serious run at Moore's job prior to the season. However, a slow start by the unheralded signal caller will open the door for the rookie, and he could prove to be too talented to keep on the bench once he gets his chance.

Finally a report from someone who isn't a complete f**ktard. It's Moore's job to lose and he won't until the season starts, and some games are played. Unless of course he suffers some horrible injury. He knows this team, he knows the playbook, and he knows how to win. Until he proves otherwise Clausen and Pike will do nothing more than sit back and wait their turn. Just as Moore did while waiting for Jake to make his exit.

It is a pretty accurate write-up and thankfully grounded somewhat with respect to Jimmy. I agree with the "Matt's job to lose" sentiment soundly and quite frankly believe it to the extent that it led to Jake's expensive release. However I do not think it is impossible for Jimmy to break into the starting role during camp or even during the first game.

If Matt feels the pressure and Jimmy flourishes with the second team enough to gain more and more first team reps in Spartanburg, Matt can be unseated. Fox is out anyway and despite everyone saying he has pressure on him I think he feels little if any.

This is a chance for him to show how well he can evaluate talent and make the tough decision.

My point is that if the cards fall right for Jimmy and not so right for Matt this summer making it close, Ol' Foxy just may make a bold move to prove to the open market watching him for possible hire next season that he can buck his stubborn persona. Not to mention he would also relieve himself of his second largest scarlet letter, loyalty to the apparent starter at QB.

Some of the usual bets may be off concerning Fox and his last year under contract.

just sayin'

agreed and very well put.

i would also throw in that neither situation scares me...moore or clausen starting. imo, both of these guys are an upgrade over jake and can make this offense more respectable than it has been in years.

I think I would like to see Clausen take a few snaps in the NFL before I say that I wouldn't be worried with him starting in the NFL if Moore gets hurt or struggles. At this point I would think Cantwell is a better option than Clausen at least until he actually does something. There are a lot of guys who look pretty good as long as they are wearing a red jersey and no one is pressuring them.

The first positive article on Moore. I'm glad someone with brains actually sees that Clausen will not be the starter unless Moore strugles. I can see us using the Rivers/Rodgers approach to Clausen and let him get a few years to learn the NFL before giving him the starting role.
