Steep price. But you've got to pay to play. As much as I like this trade it still leaves Dan Morgan basically having to navigate a flawless draft for the defense. That's the part where my skepticism is heightened.

Consider this:  A first round pick has about a 50-60% chance of success.  This draft has some of our needs in the fourth round.  I would do this deal, but you cannot ignore the cap.


If you do this deal, and I am not sure how this would work, but can you not agree in principle to an extension?    You are looking at $25-30m.  Wilson had 1100 yards and was the third most targeted WR in 2024.  He caught two thirds of them-not bad. 

To do this, you may have to cut Clowney and not re-sign Dalton.  Rework Hunt.  Rework and extend Moton. 

Wilson, XL, AT, Coker--not bad, especially if XL and Coker improve from year 1.

I know.  He would have to find a two defensive linemen and an edge--not to mention a CB and 2 Safeties.   Or LB.  Heck, you might be better off signing a free agent at top dollar instead of giving away draft capital and then paying top dollar to keep him. 

Jamarr Chase is about to get a new deal and he will be seeking $40m.

On the other hand, getting a proven star player for a pick is probably a worthwhile trade for a front office that can't seem to hit on any picks.

3 seasons, 3 straight 1000+ seasons. You might not get a top 10 for him but he is easily worth a first round pick.

Here is the dilemma: 

1. Do you trade for a player entering his fourth year if you agree to offer him a new contract, something you can do after 3 years of playing on a rookie contract?  If so, to avoid sending a first rounder for a "one and done" You will have to pay Wilson approximately $100m on a 4 year deal and lose your 2025 first round draft pick.  Wilson has been over 1000 yards each season.

2.  Chris Godwin is 29, but before his 2024 (injured some) season, had several 1000 yard seasons.  His salary will not exceed $25m per, according to the internet, which is always accurate.  With Godwin, you get a player less likely to evolve into a #1 than Wilson during the contract, and his play will likely decline slightly each year over the contract.  I imagine a 3-year deal at about $70m would be the range.  However, to get Godwin, you have to compete with other teams, sell the Panthers, and possibly overpay.  You do not, however, lose a draft pick. 

3.  Would we give away our first rounder and pay top dollar for a WR if we thought  Legette might develop into the #1?  I know a lot of you feel that he sucks, but as an athlete, his is elite.  WR skills need to be developed. We all knew he was raw when we drafted him.  We saw Legette at his floor--but we do not know his ceiling. He has a long way to go, but if they can develop him like they did Bryce, Cade, Zavala etc. are we "giving up" on XL?  Most NFL players claim to grow the most between years 1 and 2.  Is the answer to sign a lower-level free agent WR--like KJ Osborn--who averaged about 650 yards per season in Minnesota with AT and Jefferson--He is 27, and would improve the WR room--at a cost of about $5m per season.  This seems like the "Panther way" and I worry that we get stuck in mediocrity by our GM decisions--but you build through the draft. 

In other words, I have no idea.

      Little worried about Jarvy Shoulder and that torn cuff, it's needed surgery for 2 years now and he's gonna play with it injured again next season.    I like the toughness but would definitely prefer it to be fixed. He's an intritical player on the team going forward.    Also I was high on pain pills last time I wrote about saving cap space but I didn't go into detail cause I wouldn't have been able to do so. "still on a ton of pain medication but not as nearly as many, think I'm down to 23 pills a day from 32 a few days ago, 18 of them are for pain management in some form or another."     But I digress let's get to the point I was trying to make in my last post about saving, I'll now use Jarvis as an example.    Let's say the canes spend 23m of the 28m in space they have available. Then have Jarvis get surgery and put him on LTIR at the start of the regular season.  You let the cap space sit til the trade deadline. At the deadline that cap space would have accural on it and the team can use that space and spend 24m on incoming salary for the rest of the season. Let's say they bring in 5 players and send out two. "player A has an 8m AAV contract" he'd cost Carolina 4m the rest of the season. Player B makes 10 "cost of 5. So forth and so forth.  Using that accural system and the Jarvis LTIR, the Canes could then go into the playoffs with a healthy Jarvis and be 19m over the cap legally for a cup run. The more cap space available at the start of the season, the larger the accural would be at the trade deadline.    That was the first part of what I was going to try and articulate the other day but I'm on 35mg of oxy every 6 hours plus ketorolac and two other pain pills and another for kidney spasms.    Have a wonderful night everyone
