Florio Won't Go on WFNZ with Steve Smith

If Smith didn't like Clausen, he wouldn't have engaged in the rookie hazing of having Clausen bring him Cactus Cooler, he would have ignored him. Hazing is an initiation into "the club", I played football and you didn't even bother hazing guys you decided you didn't like from day 1, because they were not worthy of your attention or the rite of passage that is hazing.

Wait, so that time you pee'd on me at space camp was because you liked me?!?!?

You just got your name crossed off my "people to kill" list brother. :D

Smith's not an angel. He's done some things he shouldn't have, especially in his younger days. If we're being honest, we have to acknowledge that.

The mistake though, would be in thinking that's all there is to him.

What differentiates Smith from divas like TO and Randy Moss? For one, he has a family. And like any family man, he has to answer to his wife and kids for the kind of example he sets. He's spoken publicly about times he's disappointed them, and you can tell when you listen to him that he doesn't take that lightly. Truthfully, Smith wouldn't be the first "bad boy" to be humanized by having responsibilities.

But again, this is something Florio doesn't get :nonod:

Florio chooses to believe the bad story because he believes Smith is a bad guy. I think Ben Roethlisberger is a bad guy, but if someone came out and said he was behind the New York car bombing, I'd find that story a tad...questionable.

If you want to be respected as a journalist, you have to check the facts. And not just some of the time, every time. You can't just accept that a story is true because it sounds right based on what you believe.

That's what Florio is doing here, and it's likely to come back and bite him.

Yes, I peed on you because I cared about you - thank you for taking me off your list, now go put some lipstick on and relax. LOL

Florio responds, and it's pretty weak.

PFT: Steve Smith won't be buying a PFT T-Shirt

I declined an opportunity to appear on air with Smith; though it would have made for compelling radio, I didn't want to spend 12 minutes trying to get Smith to understand that my most important job is to protect my source, and that any details I would give him in response to his questions potentially could compromise my source.

And it's good that I didn't go on the air with Smith, because he apparently was poised to give me a verbal sucker punch. Though the audio is not yet on the WFNZ web site, the folks at SB Nation's Cat Scratch Reader have prepared a partial transcript.

"[Florio] expected he could say it and get away with it, but [smith] caught you homeboy," Smith told the Mac Attack. "I don't like liars. If he wants to talk about it we can sit down like real men. Don't worry, I won't take a swing at you. Mike is false and the source is bogus. I'm not afraid of speaking my mind, and if I have something to say to someone I say it to their face. . . .

"Florio is making this up," Smith said. "I never talked to him personally, I don't even consider him to be part of the media. There's a reason I have a few more zeros at the end of my contract than he do; and now he says 'we stand by our story' well, you know what, O.J. stood by the 'if the glove don't fit' look where he at."

So considering Smith's comments, I'm now fully convinced that he wouldn't understand my explanation and that he won't try to comprehend the importance of protecting my sources.

And given his anger level, I'm also even more convinced that I need to protect my source.

Portraying Smith as someone he and his "source" need to be afraid of is just weak.

Looks now like even one of his own colleagues thinks they need a little balance...

PFT: More perspective on Jimmy Clausen's weekend

Since Mike's source and Smith disagreed so much about Jimmy Clausen's first minicamp, I thought it would be good to hear another perspective.

Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald and Charlotte Observer is one of the most invaluable beat writers around; here's what he had to say.

"Been asked a lot about Smith-Clausen-PFT. My take? I think [Clausen] may have surprised some vet teammates, but I'm not sure anyone hates him," Gantt wrote on Twitter. "Bottom line: There were some raised eyebrows with Clausen's forward approach. But it's one weekend minicamp -- too soon to read verdict."

There has been more discussion and debate about Clausen's personality than any quarterback in memory. It hasn't stopped with the draft. Clark Judge of CBS has a fresh column on the topic.

In it, one scout said Clausen is a "jerk" and "has a degree of entitlement that is off the charts." Another said that he heard "horror stories" about Clausen to the point his team didn't want him.

This is all very personal stuff. If this is all a misguided smear campaign, Clausen should be furious. If the stories are accurate, Clausen's issues will continue to manifest.

No matter what happens, Clausen has become one of the more fascinating rookies to watch in a long time.

The last bit is written by Gregg Rosenthal, and relies mostly on Gantt.

My guess is that one or two folks at NBC may recognize that Florio's blowing it on this one.

Gantt tweets imo actually tell a lot. Gantt normally is a PR machine for what Carolina wants....to me.....Gantt sounds like Jimmy rubbed a lot of vets wrong already day 1 with his act. Gantt just said it nicely.

"Bottom line: There were some raised eyebrows with Clausen's forward approach. But it's one weekend minicamp -- too soon to read verdict."

to me Gantt had to hear or see some vets clearly suggest they weren't feeling Jimmy's attitude....but he is willing to give Jimmy a pass.
