Clausen's fall to second round and Panthers gets personal

There is no way that Clausen will be the next Ryan Leaf unless he actually wants to fail. The situation here is just too perfect for him. He may not be the next Peyton Manning either, but he sure as hell won't be Ryan Leaf. That guy was a bust of epic proportions.

The best thing for Clausen is to sit the bench behind Moore and learn how it is done in the NFL. He has never been anywhere where he wasn't the man which tends to make you think that it all about you. Starting right away would probably be to his detriment not his advantage. To be humbled into the second round followed by time on the bench with a clip board is exactly what he needs to grow some humility. Plus all of the rookie hazing makes you remember that you have't done anything at this level. I hope I am at training camp the day they tape him to the goalposts and pour gatorade all over him.

I would rather have a stuckup conceited asshole of a QB that a lazy worthless fat tub of crap like Russell. Best of all we get Clausen for a pretty big discount.

I will call it right now, my prediction is Clausen doesn't get taped to the goalpost.

I hope he does. Pike too. And I hope it's Moore and Cantwell doing the taping.

I'd rather he not be our version of Jeremy Shockey.

I hope he does also....

but even Gantt has hinted this kid from day 1 at camp surprised some vets by his actions. I don't think Jjimmy is gonna allow anyone to treat him like a rookie.

define need a QB. Very few teams have a Peyton Manning. Moore is actually as promising as it gets based on what he has done....a lot of teams with bigger needs at QB passed on him than what Carolina has. Carolina needed depth more so than to draft a potentialn starting QB based on how I look at the team.

That really, really bugs me. Some people have Moore pegged as a fantastic QB. He's not shown anything like that skill set.

Moore has shown he wins. That is the only thing that matters. There are a lot of QBs with better fundamentals and skills on paper than Tom Brady also......

I didn't say Moore was fantastic. He has shown as much promise as you could ask for in a young QB you want to give a shot....There is more to believe in when a guy shows you he can do it as this level than a college kid. Tons of great college QBs aren't great NFL QBs. Tons of average/pretty good college QBs are pretty dang good NFL QBs.

You said he's as promising as it gets. =/

Who are these average college QBs that turned into dang good NFL QBs?

Look at last year who was in the league....Tom Brady, Kurt Warner (both future HOFers), Tony Romo, etc. All average college QBs. None of them were praised like the Brady Quinn's , Jamarcus Russell's, etc. coming out of college.

I'd rather gamble on a young QB that has proven he can win NFL games like Moore than ANY college kid. Shoot, our own Jake Delhomme will go down in NFL history as a MUCH better NFL QB than a TON of highly touted college studs (1st round/2nd round) who enter the NFL. The NFL is a crap shoot at QB.

If Clausen is even 25 percent of what some scouts, reporters, and different nfl front offices are tyring to make him out to be, then I am going to go on record as saying that this is a positive thing for our smaller market, but well run franchise (for the most part).

The Kid has got some swag. People may not realize it now, but we need this.

You had your Jake Kool Aid crowd for years on here. Then you had your Matt Moore guys, and it seems some of them (many?) have already flipped over to Clausen, who hasn't thrown a pass in the NFL yet, and whose personality was even called out by Jon Gruden in those little film sessions he was doing for espn before the draft.

You have enough to worry about with your new QB.. In 3 years, he may be the biggest bust in the draft.

fans are going to side with who they like.. stop trying to throw pie in their face like it's abnormal for them to sway one way or the other.. this is a similarity in every fan base.. ;)

It is impossible for Clausen to be the next Ryan Leaf...

Leaf was drafted #2 overall and was expected to become a franchise QB for 10+ years. Clausen was drafted #48 overall and several teams passed on him multiple times.

Look at how many QBs actually make it into the league from each draft class. The only round you are SUPPOSED to get a bona fide starter and potential franchise QB is in the 1st round. If Clausen does not make it, then he simply falls into the statistical correlation that shows QBs outside the top round will struggle. Leaf on the other hand, was drafted in a position where players are considered guaranteed to play and play well.

The biggest difference though is how much each cares about the game. Leaf was NOT a hard worker or a gym rat. He also had an ego to the point where he felt he was entitled to everything. Clausen 'could' have an ego, but he works his ass off virtually every day. He IS a gym rat and is constantly trying to learn. Work case, we get a back up QB for the rest of his career in the 2nd round. Which for the failure rate of QBs, will not be so difficult to handle.

Frankly, with his 'attitude' I see the vets targeting him more so than other rookies. The rookies who do as they are told and stay out the way are often over looked and dismissed, however the proud egotistical guys will always be targeted as they will be seen as needing to be 'pegged down'. Clausen WILL get hazed. If he really IS as annoying as people want us to believe then Smith, Beason & Williams will want to put him in his place.

I have NEVER heard of a situation where an arrogant guy is ignored in this kind of situation. They put themselves on a pedestal to be knocked off. How he deals with it will indicate what kind of character he is.

yea. i think the kid will be good one day, i just dont know when that will be. he was a great passer in college, and his o-line could hardly protect him. he has a knack for throwing on the run. the o-line here can protect him. he'll have an accual pocket to throw from.

he is one of the few kids from college that get drafted by a better team than the one he played for in college.

i want him to get a realistic chance this offseason. alot of rookies like matt ryan and joe flacco have came in and played well in the NFL recently.

Yes, I agree with you, but I wasn't even referring to his physical gifts. I was referring to this supposed cockiness that ultimately allowed a kid with his gifts fall to us in the second round. It's a stroke of good fortune. You know that he now has the biggest chip on his shoulder. If he is as talented as everyone believes that he is, this should bode well for our franchise.

The only thing that has been a real question has been his maturity, and that is gonna come. Clausen appears to be a smart kid.

Talent + Humble Pie + Chip On Shoulder + Maturity = Success!
