Clausen's fall to second round and Panthers gets personal

"

Most people you talk to think the kid is a jerk," said one scout. "With what I was listening to, I thought I was hearing Ryan Leaf all over again. He has a sense and a degree of entitlement that's off the charts."

That may be extreme, but I heard similar refrains from different parts of the NFL community. Apparently, so did Carolina. When the Panthers went to the telephones on Day 2 of the draft, it wasn't only to dial St. Louis to inquire into a possible trade; it was to check again with people at Notre Dame to ascertain what, if any, liability they were assuming by drafting Clausen.

"The big word for him is inconsistency," said one head coach, "and a lot of that has to do with the person he is. What I mean by that is that his personality is reflected by how he plays. He's up and down, and the things you hear about him -- his arrogance, cockiness, entitlement, that sort of thing -- are there on the field. Sometimes he's good; sometimes he's not.

good hate him, we need a qb worth hating. nothing like getting your as handed to you buy a guy who you hate and he hates you. we saw that with vick all the time. constantly hoping he would get broken in half. let other teams hate him and instead of focusing on the team they will try to make him look bad, which in turn could make them make mistakes being to over aggressive. and power him to want to shread them for talking trash about him. if it doesnt work out for us fine, but we have never had this kind of confidence out of anyone on this team other than smith. i will be happy to see what its like to have it.

I know the panthers FO do there research..but for every team to pass on him shows there is something up with his character

alot of teams pass on players because of "character concerns" and end up looking dumb for forgetting about talent that wins games. Sure you need good character, but give me an arrogant player that plays his azz off over a goody two shoes that can't win games when it matters any day.

This media storm is either going to create an incredibly mentally strong man, or it will slowly eat away at him.

what may be his best attribute is that he has been going through this type of situation since high school.

Again, a number of teams passed on him because they didn't need a Quarterback. Not every other team thinks he's a locker room cancer or whatever.

Something to think about with all this stuff about his personality is to think about Dez Bryant. People are willing to take a risk on a troubled wide receiver but not so much a quarterback because they end up becoming a face of your franchise. In some interviews, Clausen turned some people off. He's got the talent to play, but the question for us all be if he can mature into a leader of men.

I would hope that starting the year 3rd on the depth chart behind two rookie free agent QBs might be some humble pie. I imagine working with Steve Smith would also entail large quantities of humble pie (and maybe a knuckle sandwich?). Jimmy's going to learn the NFL is not Notre Dame, and that he's going to have to man up.

personally I think it is all bs being stirred by a bunch of wankers who have never had anything positive to say about our team and never will

my bet is, that after we took clausen, there were a bunch of Gm's and coaches kicking themselves in the ass

    • That would be a great pick, he might be my favorite for us right now.
    • The coach- Canales was a rookie hc and at times looked like it. But he did manage to revamp the offense, helped Bryce not look like the biggest bust of the draft, exuded positivity,  and made the panthers watchable again. We have a viable head coach for the first time since rivera The gm- Morgan had some hits and some big misses. Hits- the ol, Coker, demani, dj at first. Misses- almost every d player signed, brooks, the jury is out on x. I get what he was trying to do with brooks/Hubbard but it blew up in his face. Hopefully he learns from his mistakes. But he did trade mingo for a 4th, managed to get a 2nd rounder this year from the Rams and I am a fan of constantly churning the bottom of the roster The draft- x can be a solid player but not until he catches the ball, brooks was a high risk pick that didn't work out, Wallace, demani and Chau Smith can be solid contributors and showed glimpses, Coker and jt should be mainstays. And flipping a 7th round lb that was about to be cut for Jackson was a great move.  The offense- had its ups and downs but Bryce has turned from one of the biggest busts in nfl history to a potential franchise qb, that change is worth its weight in gold, thielen was crafty and underrated as usual, Coker was a gem, jt was the solid but has some growing to do, and Hubbard has been awesome, the o line was much improved as well The defense- well...they set records, injuries, poor coaching (imo), bad playcalling and just plain sucking this defense needs everything to change, we need horn and Jackson back and we get brown back but we need bodies and an identity. If they can do with the def what they did with the o then we can challenge for the division bc we already have some pieces there.  Overall- this was a growth year full of questions and some of the major ones were answered(qb, coach). For the first time in a long time the season didn't end depressingly and I do have cautious optimism for next year. But they need to learn from the mistakes of 2024 and if they do I like where this team is headed. On to the draft and 2025
