Raiders release former No. 1 overall pick Russell

By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders have released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell after three unproductive and highly paid seasons.

Senior executive John Herrera told The Associated Press the move was made Thursday and that "we wish him well."

The decision comes less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington to take over at quarterback.

Russell will now likely be considered the biggest draft bust in NFL history. He will have been paid more than $39 million by the Raiders, while producing only seven wins as a starter.

He lost his starting job midway through last season. His career has been hampered by a rookie holdout, poor work habits, being overweight and the lack of productive players around him.

Raiders are actually making some smart moves and looks like they had a solid draft too. What the f**k is going on...

Yeah seriously. Wait, can this mean that Tom Cable is actually a good coach? Or maybe Al Davis is finally kicking the bucket.

If I was Russell I would be tempted to just take my millions, buy a cheap house in the suburbs, and spend the rest of my life BBQing steaks, drinking beers, and smoking weed.... from the comfort of my couch.

    • Closer in level than us and the Chiefs or Eagles. But Bryce is still the worst QB in the league around here
    • Gotta get the MVP on camera while they can.   I had Allen winning it coming into the game, but the fact the Steelers lost and the Ravens are going to win their division he has it sealed.   Now the narrative a 3x MVP goes into the playoffs can he finally win a SB or will the runner up Josh Allen take revenge on the league with his underdog roster and beat Jackson and Mahomes get his team to the SB.   These are the storylines the NFL is looking for.
    • Similar stats...so you just checking the season numbers? Now take a look at his stats when they actually play teams that are GOOD. Not the same.  Go ask texans fans how good slowik really is. Nico is a top 10 receiver NOW definitely. He also misses time due to injury, was he a top guy when davis mills was throwing him the ball? Nobody can seem to answer that. And I dont know how tank dell being quick is so significant. It's plenty of quick receivers in the league who arent good or make impact. Dell is good, I'm just saying he also has no pressure of being the main guy in houston...he is a 2/3. He would be the guy here by default. it's a stretch to say he would produce like a number 1.  5 times worse at what you said? Actually being a GOOD TEAM. I thought that was pretty straight forward.
