REPORT: Panthers interested in Khalil Mack

Recommended Posts

A player like Mack will want to go where he can win a ring.  The Panthers do not need to use their cap contributing to retirement funds--they need to build a core.  I think the odds Mack comes to Charlotte are very unfavorable.

He is playing at a high level--PFF score of 90 last year, 7 sacks--but his production will soon start dropping--you are paying last year's rate for diminishing returns.  Not smart--but he is unlikely to come here--

In terms of building a core, you need to develop edge rushers for the future, hoping they make an immediate impact.  Most take 2 seasons of development before they reach their prime years.

Nothing in the article states that we have any interest in Mack, it is just speculation which would not be the first time that Mack has been speculated to the Panthers this offseason, it still wouldn't stop us from getting pass rush help in the draft which is LOADED from rounds 2 to 5 anyways in edge rush talent.

According to what I've read, any "talent" at edge outside of like three guys is highly speculative. So there may be guys there, but they're not exactly grading out as guys that can come in and make an immediate impact; It's more like any draft.

I dont think there is an edge player in this draft at all that is an immediate impact player, sure there will be situational dudes like Carter and walker but its going to take a minute if not all year for them to get really rolling.  Every blue moon you get a peppers, hutchinson, garrett etc that are beasts from the jump but they are rare

How are we in year 3 of a rookie qb contract that we traded a kings ransom for not in a "win now" mode?

Being in year 3 of a rookie contract doesn’t mean you’re in a win mode, having a team that is one or two players away from contention does that.

we’re nowhere close to only needing one or two players to give us a shot at contending.

you don’t sign a 34 year old Mack unless that’s what you think you are, we are not that right now, it’s pretty simple

It would have to be a Clowney type situation where the contract is very reasonable. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense for this team to be pursuing guys in the mid-30s. We need legit building blocks not bandaids on their last legs. These types of guys generally sign for contenders because the goals align. The contender wants a boost to get over the hump and the aging vet wants a chance at a ring and a stable organization, he's done with all the BS and drama.

Putting vets on your team doesn't stop you from getting developmental prospects. If anything it helps enable it.

I'd be hard pressed to find a complaint for a character Mack in the locker room as long as we still start building for the future.
