Potential contract headaches

This article got me thinking the Jets situation is very similar to ours. We have some huge contracts coming up.Beason,Kalil,Willams,Davis and potentially R.Marshall.Charles Johnson contract is up soon but I dont think it will cost too much to re-sign plus some core guys with one year deals. The biggest difference is of course JR who looks like he is not willing to spend at this time.lets just hope our players understand and are willing to be patient.

The Jets appear headed for choppy financial waters with regard to some of their young stars, namely Nick Mangold, David Harris, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Darrelle Revis.

You can bet that Patrick Willis’ five-year, $50 million contract extension, announced Tuesday by the 49ers, caught the attention of several Jets players and their agents. Willis, a first-round pick in 2007, had two years remaining on a five-year deal, but his club rewarded him for being one of the top linebackers in the game.

The aforementioned Jets have to be wondering, “What about me?” And rightly so.

The Jets have sent a dangerous message to their locker room this offseason, dumping well-respected, productive veterans such as Alan Faneca and Thomas Jones. Rex Ryan always talks about how he wants his guys to “play like Jets.” Well, Faneca and Jones played like Jets and what happened? They received pink slips even though Faneca made his ninth straight Pro Bowl and Jones rushed for 1,400 yards. There's also the case of Leon Washington, who basically gave a leg for the organization and was sent packing in a trade.

The organization needs to show a willingness to take care of its own. The Jets have done it in the past, giving rich extensions to players like Jerricho Cotchery and Kerry Rhodes (gone), but the latest perception is that they’d rather take on one-year, hired guns than develop and pay homegrown talent.

Nah I disagree our situation is the same.

The difference is the Jets have moved on some of their drafted talent, in favour of trading and signing free agents.

What we are trying to do is keep our drafted players and move on the guys who were brought in through free agency on moderate to big contracts. So we are essentially wanting to reward those that we bring through rather than dump them in favour of free agents, which is what the Jets are doing...

All players we let go had either a poor season, an injured season or were grossly over paid. This has allowed the younger guys on our roster to move into starting positions when they probably are not ready. What the Jets did, was move on players and also replace them with traded and free agent players.

If you never 'cut' your young contracts and always let them expire if they are under performing, you will find the cap a much easier thing to navigate. This allows the stars such as Beason to get similar deals as Willis without any headache with cutting costs elsewhere.

I think it's a very real possibility that the reason he looks like he isn't spending right now is in preparation to spend later so that these potential headaches don't come to pass. He's never been shy about staying at the very top of the cap before.

Age alone would give him more, regardless of production.

Agreed. And it won't exactly be difficult to trump Brayton's stats.

In the last two seasons as a rotational player, CJ has 10 sacks. Brayton as a full-time starter in the last two seasons has 9.5 sacks. Not that sacks mean everything, but that statistic translates into the contract numbers more than anything else.

Actually our headaches contract wise are much worse than the Jets. Between the guys whose contracts are expiring, the one year tenders, and the guys like beason who like Willis should be getting paid ahead of time, we have twice as many guys as they do.

The other issue is that we have elevated so many guys to starters because we dumped so many veterans, that they will all have the "best years in their career" and want to be paid accordingly. The reality is that without a coach or staff here and a GM that hasn't signed his extension, we could have a huge cluster ---- Here next year. At least the Jets have shown they will spend and are contenders. We have shown none of that.

I suspect that many of the guys that folks here are so in love with like Davis, Kalil, and Moore won't be here next year if we have a winning season. Richardson might figure that since we went 8-8 in 2006, 7-9 in 2007 and 8-8 in 2009 sandwiched between the one 12-4 in 2008, that if they go for example 9-7 this year with scrubs and backups they are no worse off and 40 million to the good. I know others think this is a one year abberation but unless there is a cap floor in the new CBA, this could be the wave of the future. Draft well, give them a 5 year contract and expect to trade or unload them when the contract expires. New England has made this into a science.

Richardson has spent money in the past and if we bomb this year might feel he needs to again. But if we do better than expected, it could actually backfire on retaining veterans and signing folks long-term.

You mean the Patriots who had the 5th higest cap last year with 119 millions?

The same patriots who just gave Wilfork a 5 year 40 million contract and gave Moss a 3 year 27 million contract. Patriots is not afraid to pay their core players.

I see your point but lets not get ahead of ourself here. JR have never had problems paying his top players. To base an argument on that because he is not throwing around money right know it means he never is stupid. The obvious reason is the looming lockout.

Yes we could go 9-7 and then JR will see he can slip away with not using many money... And he has a point right?? He could also see that he could use some more money and go 10-6 and some more and go 11-5 etc. etc. It is all speculations and so is the thought that he will stop using money when the history tell you otherwise.

Damn P55 why so negative all of sudden? You used to be all positive and now the Panthers cant do anything right. Hope we see the light we need you over here:):) :cheers2::cheers2:
