reporters tone will give us hint about which qb the team is going to go with

alright im too lazy and doped up on nyquil to give this thread the proper effort by digging up old articles but im just going to assume you guys were all reading them too and can kinda remember the tone.

for a while now the charlotte press has basically operated as the propaganda wing of the team. while im sure there's not a shadowy cabal full of nazi jews secretly running things, reporters are smart enough not to bite the hand that feeds and the team only allows the kind of stories they want to be leaked. Players that break this (see beason last year) are quickly made to repent.

I think it's fair to say that we can make some educated guesses about where the team is going to go judging by the articles that gantt, chandler et al write about the team.

2007

coming off a rather unimpressive year, the Panthers signed David Carr for reasons we shouldn't debate about in this thread. However, as Zod and Meat have mentioned many a time, reporters weren't even allowed to talk to David Carr.

If you'll remember, pretty much ever article from a local reporter followed the lines of jake getting ready to bounce back, how the competition would bring out the best in him, etc etc, and there was never really a qb position battle.

of course the performance david carr might validate that

2008

coming off a blown up shoulder and a young, promising rookie, I can't remember a single thing written that took matt moore seriously as competition. it was all about jake being better than ever, jake coming in ready to retake the wheels, jake being in the best shape of his life (the one quote in particular about jake having pecs now instead of just boobs from steve smith). the qb battle wasn't very legit. True, moore didn't shine, but he also started with the twos from day one.

2009

following his insane implosion vs. arizona, every article written talked about how the massive contract extensions a. gave the panthers cap space to wiggle with and b. was rewarding him for a great career. they all kinda assumed the arizona game was a fluke, and any questions about his future were shot down.

i vividly remember them struggling in the preseason and gantt, chandler et all just shrugging it off as rust, and as soon as the season started they'd get back on their feet.

whelp

2010

after the season ended this year, pro matt moore articles began to flood the internet from the usual suspects. it was all about how matt had made the transition, matt was ready to lead, jake was supportive of matt, then boom jake is in cleveland getting staph.

now.....?

i don't know about you guys, but maaaaaaan are people favoring clausen from what I've read.

now here's a gif and a yt

i'll give you a more proven theory as to who might start,if moore plays 2 1/2 qtrs during the third preseason game he's the starter going into week 1 if both he and clausen are splitting time it's up in the air

Rep for playing a Danish band :)

This is a Fox lead team and Matt Moore is starting week one.

if post 2007 and the 2009 season proved one thing, it is Foxy ain't big on Moore. Fox starts and commits to guys he likes (not sure what guys do to become "Fox guys" but it ain't just about being a vet).

IMO, I think Fox ends up going w/ Clausen. He will like Clausen better in camp. Clausen will give the team the best chance to win.....

.......and then for one reason or another, Moore comes in for the 3rd season and mops up the mess making Fox look like a fool for the 3rd time in regards to his usage of Moore.

If we were talking about Andrew Mason here, I might agree with you.

But Gantt, Chandler, and the other guys have no clear indication who the starter is going to be. They can only report about which quarterbacks are performing well in camp, and who's playing with the ones.

That might give us an indication as to who will start, but it will be the reporter's info, and not their tone, that tips us off.

Barring injury Moore will start, and most likely finish the season.

If he shits the bed, he will still start until probably week 8-9.

i don't think thats the case at all.

moore might start but fox/hurney is downright giddy over clausen. moore was never really a favorite. he'll be on a short leash. no way he will be given the leniency that jake was last year. if matt struggles, he'll be gone.

it isn't like they have a lot invested in him.

If Clausen looks like his last name should be Manning he'll start. I don't know if the media is going to let this go. They want him to play. Hurney is giddy. Fox is smiling. They had no way of knowing this kid would fall into their laps and had someone showed you our picks BEFORE the draft you would have thought Hurney could turn water into wine. Matt deserves the job but it's Clausen's for the taking. It's totally up to him right now and Fox has publicly stated that fact.

Hmm...

In 2007 David Carr arrived, completely shell-shocked from his experience in Houston, and it was widely said that he was going to be the backup. All speculation centered on how long it would take him to recover from the sacks he took, and he never ran with the ones in Training Camp.

On the other hand, there was a lot to write about regarding our new OC, and Jake's return from injury (He missed most of December in 2006, which saw us fall out of playoff contention. That was the year we limped into Atlanta and ran the Wildcat with our rookie Williams).

So there wasn't a ton of reason to write about David Carr anyway.

In 2008 it was all about Jake because he was the first starting QB to try and come back from TJ surgery. If you can't see that as the main story, then you should go back to your nyquil.

In 2009 it was again all about Jake because he had the meltdown and everyone wanted to know if it was a blip or a sign of things to come. Also, Jake was the only QB who played worth a damn in Preseason. Why would they write about Moore, who couldn't even get on to the field in the third preseason game?

Now it's 2010, and it was all about Moore until the draft. We have a potential Franchise QB, so naturally people want to read about him. And that's what the writers will respond to.

What they write about doesn't mean crap, it's not a reflection on who will start. It's a reflection of what's newsworthy, and that doesn't always mean the same thing.
