Re-sign Rantanen and figure the rest out later.

Mikko has had more 100 point seasons than all Canes players since they moved to NC.  He’s a top five player in the league.  Necas had a hot start but you’re dreaming if you think this is a lateral move.  Looks like Tlusky thinks we can win a cup this year.

there is no way Tulsky is viewing this as a rental, he seems pretty masterful at manipulating the cap

The 2025 salary cap is expected to increase 5% to $92M next season. It could be higher depending on the outcome of the CBA, which is being negotiated as we speak.

Colorado turned Rantanen loose because he wanted $14M in his next deal. He is currently in the last year of a 6-year, $9.25M AAV contract. The Avs were offering $12.6M AAV and that wasn't good enough for him.

Taylor Hall is in the final year of a $6M AAV contract and is also a UFA after this season. He's a secondary piece to the trade and will likely be gone regardless.

The NHL salary cap is pretty hard and fast. Unlike the NFL, there aren't many loopholes and "manipulating the cap" isn't really a thing in the NHL. Add up the AAVs of the players on your roster and make sure they add up to less than or equal to the cap. That's it, in a nutshell, with a couple caveats for LTIR, etc.

If Tulsky thinks he can sign Rantanen long term at a cost of somewhere between $12.6 and $14M, the Canes will probably not be able to bring back Roslovic, Fast or Burns/Orlov. Either Burns or Orlov, depending on who will take a smaller contract, unless Burns decides to retire after the season.

And, keep in mind, the Canes are still looking for a #1 goalie. Freddie is also a UFA and I think a lot of people will be very surprised if the Canes bring him back.

I'm simply pointing out some of the hurdles the Canes face going forward. The acquisition of Rantanen will have a bigger impact than Guentzel did last season, but it comes with a cost. And I'll be waiting to see what that cost is when the roster for the 2025-26 season is set.

I thought so too then saw we were top 4 in points and actually a couple points ahead of this time last year.  This gives the canes a player they haven’t had since Eric Staal. And if he makes AHO better, then the team just got two super stars. Aho is is star but not a top level star like Moose is.  This is gonna be fun.

Yeah, Rantanen is arguably a superstar level player, which we don't have.

KK seems like an obvious option to move but he really has to start humming so we can sell high like we did with Necas. I love Necas but I don't think you will see him blossom into a consistent 100 point scorer like Rantanen is.

The fact is Necas hit his ceiling with us. I loved necas but he is in the wrong system. 2 goals in 20 games. Not great at defending.  Disappears in the playoffs.  The canes weren’t going to get better if they stayed status quo. This move takes us to a scoring level.  The fan base begged for scoring over the last 3 months.  Begged for it. The fact that the canes are 2nd in the east and 4th on the league with suspect scoring, defense, and goalie play just shows how good this team can really be and why Tulsky and his analytics showed we needed to make a move.  This reminds me of the moves Florida made to push to cup contention.  Aho and Moose are friends so I would imagine he signs sooner than later.

Thankfully for Rantanen, he has an agent that negotiates for him. There is zero reason for him to negotiate a salary before the season is over. If he were to win the Hart Trophy, the Canes win the Cup, etc. he may decide he wants to be the highest player in the NHL. Why would he want to leave a couple mil on the table?

Countrymen/friends and money don't mix. And if you think for a minute Rantanen is going to accept a lower salary just because he's friends with Aho... You think RBA's kid is taking a lower salary because his dad is the coach?

C'mon, man. The friends and family discount is a myth among fans.

That’s not what I meant. Having Aho will only help persuade him to stay. I fully expect Moose to get 12-14. Easily.  Plus, we can afford it. I was also hinting at that they learned from Jake and will not wait to sign. They will be ready to get a deal done fast.

Colorado has 3 other Finnish players on their roster... didn't seem to help.

Look, I'm not trying to throw cold water on the trade. I think moving Necas was inevitable and felt it should have been done in conjunction with keeping Jake Guentzel last season. Had Carolina decided to move on from Necas, there's a good chance Guentzel would still be here. But, that's in the past.

All I'm saying is there are big questions to be answered.

If he scores and helps them win, that’s step one. Second, somehow winning a cup with him will only make more stars want to come here.  Aho is his good friend though.

FYI Necas is already making his debut right now for the Avs on NHL Network.

Hall and Mikko will play tonight for the Canes as well.

The Canes will have 35-40m in cap space to fill out the team. Mikko wants 8x14m, give it to him. Let burns and Orlov walk and play nikishin and the younger guys on defense and/or make a smart signing in FA.

go get a goalie and fill out the rest of the wingers with 10-12m in cap space.
