Is Weis in our future?

Ok first and foremost, I am not really the "doom and gloom" person that is going to predict how the season is going to end or ready to give up but I've been thinking about this since the draft and it does make some sense.

Ok so, we all know the situation going on with Fox. Depending on how this season ends will determine Fox's fate. So what if it comes to Fox not being retained as head coach?

Obviously a lot of candidates will probably stand out but I can't help but notice that this team is setting themselves up for a Charlie Weis run team. Think about it:

1) If in fact Hurney will be back, he would want someone similar to Fox that could have equally the same success as Fox had. Fox and Weis are good friends and Fox could recommend Weis.

2) Jimmy Clausen. He was Weis's QB during his time with ND and despite the downfall at ND, he was still a pretty decent QB.

3) Has his former offensive line coach (Jeff Davidson) there. Who, since joining the Panthers, has ran practically the same offense that Weis ran in NE during his time there.

So practically, while some of you may hate the idea of Weis coming here, it does seem like we are setting ourselves up for it. Again, everything is just speculation at this point because we have no idea what will happen this season or what will happen with Fox. On top of that, getting Weis would depend on how successful he will be in Kansas City. Finally, the season hasn't even begun so it may be way too early to even be talking about this.

Thoughts?

unless this team BOMBS big time this year (they won't), no one is going anywhere. But there is some logic in there somewhere

If this team doesn't make the playoffs they part ways w/ Fox. This isn't a playoff team. Reality is, Fox I think likely would already be gone if a good job opened up this past season. Pretty sure he would have left for it.

I wouldn't want Weiss...I wouldn't want anyone from the Belichick/Patriot tree. They all are overrated and prove it when they have left.

Not sure. If I had to guess I would say one our coordinators would be the #1 target for a promotion to HC before anyone else. Fox seems to defer to them more than any other coordinators of the past which is telling.

Cower will always be mentioned just because it is too obvious not to.

weiss is the only one from the belicheat tree that is worth anything. he was the mastermind behind their offense that they still use and that mckid rode to land himself a coaching job with the dumb donkeys.

he didn't work out in notre dame because his offense was waaaaaayyy too complicated for a bunch of college kids who didn't have near the amount of time needed to do it well. weiss' offense was well ahead of anyone else at the college level.

that said, i don't know about having him here as a HC. i think it could work but he very well could be one of those OCs that just can't make the transition to HC.

i wouldn't hate it if he got the job after fox but i think there are better choices (jim harbaugh).

I think Fox is out no matter what barring an unexpected finish. He is a caretaker nothing more. If we make the playoffs it will give Richardson a dilemma. I think he plans to let Fox work out his contract and replace him. if Fox surprises with this group of backups and scrubs it will be interesting to see what Richardson does at that point.

The offense wasn't the issue at Notre Dame, the problem was he could never recruit defense, or even get a nice defensive coach to teach the kids there. Their offense this past season lead them to 4 fourth quarter comeback wins, and 4 more fourth quarter comebacks that their defense lost them the game in the last three minutes of it.

Weis does not do defense.

Richardson prefers defensive coaches.

Looking back at prior coaching searches, to my knowledge the team has never even interviewed an offensive coach.

I still believe the next coach (assuming Fox gets the axe) is a young DC in the league.

    • i think i go in the opposite direction of most. my ideal retirement is living in some old downtown area in a flat above some shop or something.  life out in the country was just something i got real tired of. My kids actually miss some of living out there, which i understand. that was where they grew up for the most part. 40 acres with a 2.5 acre pond. it was beautiful, but also way too much (and too expensive) for me to keep up with.
    • FLASHBACK: I remember back when ESPN was just starting--he was their anchor.  They used to show stuff like Rodeo and field hockey--I remember laughing when he went to a commercial mocking a cycling competition in Utah (or something similar--I made that up) and I laughed.  I told my dad, "We may have us a new anchor when we get back from commercial."  When they came back from commercial, Berman was looking very serious and he said, "Any comments by me do not reflect the views of ESPN....The men and women who cycle are dedicated athletes and we are honored to shine light on their sport." (Paraphrasing).  Dad laughed hysterically. My first memory of him--and that was like 1980.
    • Might not have a team without them. Although that probably applies to the Panthers, too.
