roster moves?

We're going to need another center once one of Chandler and Mohammed get traded this offseason because of their expiring contracts. We've got a pair of injury-prone centers making $12MM and $6MM in the last year of their contracts, so center is a spot we need to upgrade. Hopefully we can dump Chandler's $12MM and bring in Haywood, who offers similar production to a healthy Tyson Chandler and would come cheaper. We'd be dumping $12MM, adding a fraction of that for Haywood, and keeping the rest of it to combine with other moves to improve our team.

Maybe I'm the one that's wrong, but I think too many people are thinking of this team as a finished product with a couple adjustments needed, but I think that's really far from the truth. Gerald Wallace is the only player on this team that is even slightly untouchable, and it wouldn't suprise me if he was the only starter left from this season's team once the 2010-2011 season starts.

I am pretty sure Tyson contract is a PLAYER OPTION. At 28yrs old and a reputation for being injury prone he is not gonna warrant 13million on the market. He is gonna take the GUARANTEED money. I can safely say i am not one of those that think the team is a finished product.

Looking for a pure scorer? Anthony Morrow should come cheap, even as a restricted free agent, and averages 16 points per 36min. Not only that, but he's a career 46% 3-point shooter. He's also a Charlotte native and looks to be a young player that could have a big breakout season if put in the right situation.

The starting 5 for next season's opener are already on the Bobs roster :)

According to ESPN, he has an ETO for this upcoming season. I highly doubt he'd exercise it though, meaning that we can trade him essentially as $12MM off the books for the '11 offseason, when players like Joakim Noah (RFA), Carmelo Anthony, Tayshaun Prince, Kevin Durant (RFA), Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Andrei Kirilenko, and any RFA signing a one-year deal this offseason will be on the market. It may not seem like much, but for a team with a young core that misses out on a big name this offseason, dealing with one year of Chandler for the potential to get a stud player next offseason would be worth the risk.

Yes he has a ETO. It is basically the same thing as a player option in this case. I don't see him exercising it either, why would he? ha.

And I agree keep him in hopes for next year, especially since Chandler's trade value can't be that high.

Can you even trade someone with an ETO anyways?

No offense, but I hope you're wrong. That would mean we're sticking with Felton or going with Augustine, neither of which I'm thrilled with. If we don't get a new PF, then I'm fine with Thomas, but I do think we need a new starter (yes, over what we already have on the roster) at center too.

I don't see why you couldn't trade someone with an ETO. As long as he declines to exercise it by whatever date was predetermined, it would be just like trading for a player with one year left on his contract.

And to clarify, I'm in favor of shopping Chandler anywhere and everywhere before deciding to keep him. I think the amount of value he actually has will surprise you; we got Stephen Jackson for an injured Raja Bell and Vlad Radmanovic. Chandler may not be worth much as a player, but his expiring contract may be able to bring in a player with plenty of value to us, especially if we were to combine it with something decent.

Sorry, I must have misread your post, ha.

I just read this:

Interestingly, there is no mechanism to notify the league that an option will NOT be exercised. Teams and players might want to do this in order to make the player tradeable after the season ends but before July 1, or because the player wants to be traded to a team which does not want the player if he might become a free agent. As described in question number 53, under these circumstances the team and player can mutually amend the contract to remove the option.

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

If I am reading this correctly, it sounds like it is tricky to trade someone with an ETO. Because there's no real way of "Not exercising the ETO." So if a player with an ETO is traded to a team (before July 1st) that he doesn't like for whatever reason, can he use that ETO to become a free agent? That's what it sound like to me. I guess after July 1st it is easier.

No problem dude. My big thing with wanting to trade Chandler moreso than Mohammed has a lot to do with his contract. We could trade away his $12MM and get a player that's just as good as he is when he's healthy for around half the price in Brendan Haywood. Haywood and Mohammed splitting time at Center would be nice for us.

Sounds like it to me. I'm sure with a trade though, the receiving team would get some kind of guarantee that the player would not exercise the ETO, kind of like in baseball when a player agrees to be traded but the receiving team has to pick up his option. It seems like there's the potential for some fun to happen in a trade, but the player would have to be a real doucher for something to go down.

Wacky fantasy trades.

1. Gerald Wallace/DJ Augustin/Nzar/2011 1st to the Hornets, CP3/Julian Wright/Morris Peterson to the Bobcats. Tyson Chandler/Morris Peterson to the Pistons for Rip Hamilton/2010 2nd round pick. Boris Diaw/2011 2nd for JR Smith/Chris Anderson.

PG- CP3, resign Felton

SG- Rip, JR, Henderson

SF- Jack, Brown, Wright

PF- TT,Birdman,

C- Diop, Ajinca,

With tweeners like Birdman and Derrick Brown able to contribute at two spots, JR a streaky shooter off the bench, a cagey veteran duo of Jackson and Hamilton, and a elite PG distributing the ball this is a playoff team that will get past the first round. Yeah, i know Center is a definite weakness and giving up G-Force hurts but gaining Rip,CP3,Birdman, and JR and it is a wash.

Ok that works too. Honestly i have been trying to figure out a way to get the RIP & Crash combination. But i also am unsure that Richard would be an upgrade at SG. I know Chris Paul would be a MAJOR upgrade over Felton and DJ though.

Uh, why not ship Jack to the Hornets and keep Wallace.

First off, this. Jackson is actually making less money than Crash is, so there's a good chance Jackson would be more appealing, especially if the Hornets really are going into a "dump payroll" phase.

Also, bringing back Felton to back up CP3 probably isn't that good of an idea. Felton is going to be making too much to be a back-up, especially if we're going to be spending top money for Paul. Steve Blake is a much better fit as a back-up PG.

In the Tyson Chandler/Rip Hamilton deal we'd be trading one injury prone player's bloated contract for another's, who's actually making more money than Chandler is.

Can't say much about trading Diaw for Smith/Anderson, I kind of like this deal if it were to go down. What I can say though is we could get an Anthony Morrow/Kyle Korver-type guy on the cheap in free agency.

The ESPN trade machine isn't really working at the moment because guys like Mohammed and Chandler haven't made it official that they're staying yet, but there are a few things I'd love for us to do this offseason. One is upgrade at PG. I don't really care whether its CP3 (actually I do, he's my favorite option), Harris, or someone like them, we need an improvement over Felton if this team is going to go anywhere. One player I do not like for PG though is Monta Ellis. He'd be fine as a two-guard, but he's no PG. Another thing we need to do is improve what we've got going in the frontcourt. Allowing Thomas to start is part of that, but I think we should go out and sign someone, specifically Brendan Haywood, to be our starter at C with Nazr backing him up and Chandler shipped out of town. Another thing we do need is a sniper off the bench, which I think one of Morrow or Korver would be great for.

All in all what I really want the Bobcats to do is to not stand pat with what they have. This isn't a young team that just had its first of a long string of playoff appearances, nor are we in a situation where we can just buy a championship. Like it or not, the Bobcats are a hobbled together club that got into the playoffs this year more off the sweat of their backs than the amount of talent this team has. I really believe being standing pat will kill this team, that is, if we don't try to make improvements now then we may as well mail in next year.

I'm all for dealing anyone but Wallace, if we get a better player in return. After everything Gerald has done and given to this team, I'd be pissed as fug if they traded him. Like boycott them for a season pissed off.

I'd really like to keep Tyrus Thomas too, though. A year under Brown will do him a lot of good, like it did Wallace.

I just don't think we'd get a better player for Tyrus Thomas or Gerald Wallace.

If we land Bosh, then we could let Thomas and/or Jackson go a lot easier. But this squad hasn't been together a year, they had no business making the playoffs, and they barely scraped in. They played the Magic better than the Hawks did, and probably better than Miami or the Bulls or the Bucks would have.

All things considered, we're pretty solid heading into next season. We're just one player away from being elite. Or one season away from buying into Larry Brown. Not sure which. I'd think we've got nowhere to go but up, no matter what the roster looks like this time next year.

Anyone that thinks otherwise is just a talking head spouting speaking points, or getting their info from talking heads.

I hate it when someone hears something on ESPN then rushes to these (or the Panthers) sub-forum as is they have some sort of brilliant insight on a team they couldn't name the original starting point guard for.

I can almost guarantee you we won't get Bosh, we simply don't have the money to do it. If there's too much focus on guys like Bosh, Stoudemire, and Boozer, someone is going to slip in and get David Lee who could make just as much of an impact as the bigger names and will come at a lesser price.

And yes, I do agree that we're a pretty solid team, but at the same time there's some positions we need to get better at. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but upgrades at PG and C are an absolute must if we want to build on the success of last season.
