Fox says “budget” is the reason the Panthers traded SS Harris

I am/was a HUGE Harris fan and hope he does well back home, BUT this mice made sense whether you want to admit it or not. Martin is a far better option against teams in a now pass happy NFL.

Harris' vocal leadership and punishing style if play will be missed, but otherwise I like this move, regardless of the reason.

I feel exactly the same.

true you gain better pass protection in Martin but you lose better run support and leadership from Harris.

We have probably the softest secondary in the league. Godfrey, Martin, Gamble, and Captain on the field at the same time is a recipe for disaster in rushing downs. The linebackers, conversely, one of the toughest units in the league, should have their work cut out for them.

Lets hope no one gets hurt..because we have no depth at some spots and questionable starters on defense.

It's all about the impending lockout next season. Dumping the vets, going young, not signing free agents, no extension for Fox, everything. JR wants to run the team lean financially to ride through the lockout and come out in good shape on the other end. That, and it's also to show solidarity with the other owners who are following the same strategy.

Yeah, it blows but it doesn't mean this upcoming season is a throwaway. It is going to be a tougher challenge, though.

I'm sure the desire to re-sign guys like Davis, Kalil and Williams have something to do with this self-imposed budget.

I hope so 4 our sake......we cant take anymore hits 2 the core of our team.....we already have huge veteran leadership questions.....and of course a new found inability to stop the run......SMH, the last thing we need is to lose ANY bright spot we have!!!!

I don't think veteran leadership is going to be as big of an issue like many of you think...

you have Beason... one of the best leaders in the league.

Davis is ready to step up and expected to fill a leadership role.

Gamble is there to assist in leadership.

Everette Brown has already talked about how his passion is to step up as a leader.

we aren't in a situation where we only have Beason to glue the defense together.. we should be just fine.

Yep. There IS a cap this year, for those who said there isn't. It's after this season that the CBA runs out. This actually seems like a smart strategy; I relate it conversely to when the 49rs tried to 'play' the cap when it first cap into effect...they screwed themselves royally. Maybe this will help us to stay competitive long-term. I think we will be better than last year, even with all of the releases.

IDK if would count on Gamble as a leader just because he is so quiet and Brown is going to have to perform first before anyone looks at him as a leader..Not too many big time leaders are backups..lol

Leadership is a question mark for this team.but I think its something we can get over..depth is a bigger issue on defense.
