Am I the only one that doesn't like the Spec Ops trend in current war games? Give me real all-out war, damn it!

Tribes 2.

Tribes 2 is a multiplayer online game, designed for Internet or LAN play with up to 64 players (32 vs 32) or bots per match, although a small single-player tutorial mode is included. The game may be played from both first- and third-person perspectives.

Each match takes place on an Earthsiege-themed map. The Tribes 2 engine, an early version of the Torque Game Engine, is capable of both indoor and outdoor maps, with expansive play areas. Player movement about the map may be on foot, using a jet pack, or in various ground and airborne vehicles as pilot, co-pilot, or passenger.

Each match is played according to one of a number of possible game modes, which dictate the rules of the match. These modes include capture the flag, deathmatch, rabbit-chase, and others.

Players are free to choose their own role, and may deploy various items of weaponry, vehicles, and emplacements. Many of these items can be left unattended to operate automatically, or control may be assumed by players.

Each player may also choose from three character classes (which trade off various abilities, e.g. weak but fast, or strong but slow), and a weapon and equipment loadout, which may be reconfigured at any time during a match.

The large variety of equipment and deployable items results in many opportunities for creative play and tactics, from pure combat to stealth. As such, playing style varies dramatically from player to player, and from moment to moment, but Tribes 2 gameplay may be generalised as being fast-paced combat, over a wide playing area. Tribes 2 gameplay makes extensive use of jet pack-powered flight, which adds a notable vertical element to combat.

Player vs player combat is a central element of Tribes 2 gameplay, even in team-based modes, and all players are free to kill or be killed (including Teamkilling). The difficulty of hitting players mid-air results in an emphasis on splash damage for attacking other players.

Came out in 2002, so the graphics are a little dated, and its no longer supported....

...but its 100% free and plays on almost any PC.

Free? Sounds good to me maybe I'll download it. Anyone ever play Enemy Territory? That game used to rule my life.

I just want them to make a good Vietnam shooter or a hypothetical Cold War escalation like world in conflict. For anyone who hasn't plaed WiC and likes RTS games check it out. The Soviet Assault expansion was friggen awesome. It's basically if the military-coupe against Gorbachev had succeeded and Russia decided to launch a war before their economy collapses.

I play Red Orchestra for my WarSim.

I'll have to check it out, looks fun. Is it like a mix of bots/players like Arma2? Like I've mentioned several times here Projecty Reality has owned my ass years now, and after playing warsims I really find it hard to go back to regular FPS games.

News around the net says that Treyarch developer said no commando, no nukes, killstreaks won't add on to your killstreak, so your harriers won't get you enough kills for a chopper gunner or w/e, you have to earn those kills. Also shotguns and machine pistols most likely NOT secondaries, secondaries most likely only pistols and launchers again.

No, I don't think it uses bots.

And with the purchase of Red Orchestra, you get two free expansions, Mare Nostrum and Darkest Hour.

RO started off as a mod like Project Reality, but developed such a following that eventually Tripwire was able to secure the $ to license the Unreal Engine and released a heavily updated commercial version. The original required UT2004 to play, but the version on steam is stand alone.

For $9.99 you get the game, two expansions, and all the community made content.

The graphics are dated, but the controls and action is not. Its like a cross between Ghost Recon and Medal of Honor's online multiplayer.

Here's the breakdown:

About the Game

Fight in the theatre of war that changed the world forever. Battle alongside your compatriots on some of the most inhospitable environments of the Eastern Front in Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. Red Orchestra places you in the most realistic WWII first-person multi-player combat to date on the PC, allowing the player to fight through some of the most intense combat of the war. You can play as infantry, using a wide range of infantry weapons, or crew one of the many armored combat vehicles available in the game, from half-tracks to the most famous German and Soviet heavy tanks. Engage the enemy with everything in your arsenal, from your bayonet at close quarters up to the massive 122mm cannon on the Soviet IS-2. And if that isn't enough, find an officer and a radio to call in thunderous artillery strikes to shake the enemy loose.

New for Summer '07

This update includes a new map, a new vehicle and some major graphical enhancements to the game and is available to owners of the game for free through Steam. The new map - Krivoi Rog - gives players the largest tank slugfest to date, with 16 square kilometers of terrain, 3000 meter viewable range and up to 50 players. This map also features the new vehicle - the German Panzer IV G, providing the German players with some additional fire-power for the mid-war period.

In addition to the new map and vehicle, an all-new adaptive bloom system has been added for the game's graphics, making the bloom crystal-clear even at low resolutions. For further eye-candy, Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering settings are now configurable in-game.

New for Spring '07

Ten new maps, the winning entries in Tripwire's Custom Map Competition. Tripwire worked with the developers of each of these maps to ensure the maps are optimized, polished, and gameplay balanced. Highlights in the new map-pack include:

"Smolensk Stalemate": the contest winning map features perfectly balanced to-and-fro infantry combat through ruined villages and trenches in August 1943.

"Leningrad": features close-quarters infantry fighting in the ruined streets of the city, above them in the bombed-out buildings and deep beneath them in the sewers, all with close-in armor support.

"Berezina": the After-Hourz team surpass themselves on this rural/village map, introducing not just a new vehicle (the Russian BT-7 light tank), but also the first functional anti-tank gun in the game. To cap it off, the BT-7 even carries tank-riders.

"Black Day July": one of the very best for tank combat fans, set in the rolling countryside around Prokhorovka as German and Russian armor clash en masse during the Battle of Kursk.

Increased player limits. A new level of intensity with 50+ player multiplayer battles (up from the previous limit of 32).

New community made content, including the Russian BT-7 light tank with infantry tank riders and the first player controllable anti-tank gun in the game.

New soundtrack: The "Orchestra" comes to the Ostfront - the game now features a complete in-game soundtrack from composer Matthew Burns.

Gameplay enhancements. The addition of several features requested by the clan/ladder/league community to enhance competitive play.

System Requirements

Minimum: CPU: 1.2 GHZ or Equivalent, 512 MB RAM, Video Card: 64 MB DX9 Compliant, 2 GB free hard drive space, DX 8.1 Compatible Audio, Windows 2000/XP

Recommended: CPU: 2.4 GHZ, Video Card: 128 MB DX9 Compliant with PS 2.0 support, Sound Card: Eax Compatible

All the new updates have been applied to Darkest Hour (European Front) and Mare Nostrum (Egyptian Front).

The main game's focus is on the Russian Front. You really can't beat it I don't think.
