The mini camp thread...

Greg Hardy and Eric Norwood each showed flashes of pass-rush in the afternoon session. Going to be interesting to see them in pads.

The Panthers may have never had four QBs in camp who can throw like these four can. There's generally been a rag-arm or two in there.

Several nice Dwayne Jarrett catches in the afternoon practice. I'll have to see it translate in the regular season to believe it, but still.

NORWOOD A BEAST: Cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said he’s excited about being teammates again with Eric Norwood, his roommate at South Carolina.

He thinks Norwood, who has been working at both strong side linebacker and defensive end in minicamp, will be a huge asset to the Panthers following an All-American career with the Gamecocks.

“You can expect a guy who is going to go 110 percent every day,” Munnerlyn said. “I’ve seen it. And when it’s game time he just turns it up another notch. He goes 150 percent in a game. In a game he just turns into a beast.”

However, when asked if he’d like to be roommates with Norwood again and if he can crash at his place, Munnerlyn joked, “I told him he better not. He better go get his own place.”

And that’s just fine with his new Panthers wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert.

He views the fact that Edwards has never played the position before as a positive rather than a negative.

“He comes here and he has no bad habits,” said Tolbert. “The stuff that I’m teaching him, well, it’s his first time learning it so that’s a good thing.”

The Panthers traded away a second round pick in next year's NFL draft to get Edwards, so it's obvious they have big plans for him. And, just two days into minicamp, the coaching staff isn't holding back on what they’re throwing at him.

Although most receivers come into the league having to learn one position, the Panthers have Edwards lining up at all three wide receiver positions -- specifically, the X, Y and Z spots, for you football nuts -- along with learning how to return punts and kickoffs. Eventually, the team will put in a package where he can play some quarterback in Wildcat-type formations.

Edwards update

While Edwards, for now, is a projection to move from quarterback to wide receiver, he’s got the speed, quickness, overall athleticism and work ethic to excel in the NFL. He appears to be a natural for the slot position, which will allow him to use his quickness in the middle of the field while the outside receivers work the edges.

Edwards’ spectacular catches made up for a Friday afternoon workout with numerous drops. After all, he’s playing the position for the first time since early in his high school career

little surprising to hear.

Though it's fairly apparent Tuesday's move was as much salary dump (Harris had $7.7 million left on his contract over the next three years) as about getting young players on the field, Fox made no effort to hide his feelings when asked his opinion Sunday morning.

"We've got a budget," he replied matter-of-factly. "And that had something to do with it."

The Panthers got backup LB Jamar Williams in the deal, who could add some depth which was needed. But Fox's statement made clear it might not have been his preference.
