Hurney: Keeping Kalil a priority with obstacles

if they tag kalil they would have to pay him LT money....

This. It would be almost 11 million for one year.

And I wish people would stop saying how smart Hurney is with contracts. The only people that think this are Jake Delhomme and his agent. Remember how much we're paying him to play for Cleveland.

Kalil, Williams, and Thomas Davis all need to be extended. With all the saving we did this year I don't see why we wouldn't be able to.

It's gonna be Willams (top 5 RB money), Davis (top 10 LB money), Marshall (who knows), Moore (who knows), Kalil (probably will be the highest paid C in the league when his deal comes) , and Beason (who will be in the position to extend his deal next offseason as well, probably top 3 MLB money), who I figure to be top priority next offseason depending on the salary cap situation....if all command top dollar at their positions (highly unlikely, but possible, depending on next year), someone's gonna have to be let go, depending on what other holes have to be filled.....that's why I think this uncapped year has really screwed up a lot of teams in the long run.

I really doubt that Hurney couldn't figure out how to get around this rule or at least do a contract for a few years with an option to void it and renegotiate once the new CBA is finalized. I guess he will just have to wait until someone else figures out how to get around the 30% rule and then copycat it. No doubt we would have to give guys like Kalil a big signing bonus but 80%. Seems way overblown. I would think that roster bonuses don't count as basic salary and are not subject to the 30% rule and don't have to be guaranteed. Once exercised they are treated like a signing bonus and prorated over the life of the contract. After all since salaries aren't guaranteed either, I would think roster bonuses and basic salaries would be seen similarly by players and both would be acceptable.

Cmon you closet capologists. Is there a way to do it? I will believe that it can't be done only if no one else does it either.

I don't think they can just re-up everybody with boatloads of moneys in this "uncapped" year, be cause a new CBA could be retroactive.

I suspect that the owners are looking to scale back salaries and the cap. They may believe that as a result salaries, may not escalate the way they have over the past couple years and may even go backwards. Therefore they are not signing new guys because they might feel they will be able to sign them cheaper down the road.

Just like this uncapped year hasn't been a bonanza for most players, I suspect that players who sign now and are willing to use roster bonuses and smaller base salaries to substitute for larger base salaries will end up better off than if they wait until the new CBA is decided. Of course they may feel that with a rookie salary cap that there will be more money for the veterans. Frankly I don't think so.
