it is a good point. However, w/ the projected DL there is no way Carolina can survive playing a heavy cover 2. Cover 2 also relies on the front 4.....and you are talking about some extreme positive thinking suggesting this group can hack it.

We will live or die by the Cover 2 this year.We have always run a cover 2 or cover 3 shell for the most part.

we always have under Fox....but the DL has never once been close to being as weak as it is this year under Foxy. I think about half way through the season they will be forced to go out of the comfort zone to survivie. Teams will pick us apart.

Sure it has been. In 2007 we generated a total of 23 sacks and only 14 were generated by the defensive line. We blitzed a lot to make up for it. Only problem was we sucked at blitzing. We were 16th in total defense- 17th against the pass and 18th against the run. We were 31st in sacks.

the 2007 line was much better from a talent stand point. That was a year of horrific production......also, you might be putting the cart before the horse.....this bunch could do even worse. That was our first look at a DL minus Peppers(he was just techinically there).......but at least then we had Jenkins.

Talent aside, the defensive line in 2007 yielded poor results. I expect this line to be on par statistically. I actually expect them to improve over the year as well. I don't think we will be horrible but if people expect our defense to pick up where they left off last year they are in for a big surprise.

I can agree/ that. On par w/ them. I do expect Brown to continuously get better and better. I think if someone on the DL has shot to standout that it will be him...but I expect a late surge also. I think too much of this fanbase think a top 10 D will be there....I think we finish somewhere in the bottom half.

Smitty and Gross

Beason and Marshall(If he stays)/Godfrey

Kasay

Of those guys we can count on Beason and Gross. Smitty has never been a leader, Marshall is disgruntled and Godfrey can't even figure out where to play half the time let alone be a leader. As for Kasay, I expect he will retire.

Our defense this year will be noticeably different from what it was last year. Better or worse? I can't tell you yet but as Meeks gets more and more players to fit what he wants to do, we'll really see how capable his defense will be. From the looks of the offseason so far it appears as if we are gearing up to blitz a lot more, shifting to cover safeties and gathering fast linebackers. My only real concern is the lack of a true 1-technique defensive tackle, although apparently Leonard is going to be at that spot so I won't worry just yet. If our DTs can keep linemen off our linebackers or get consistent penetration, we'll see a very good defense very soon.

I'd consider Kalil a leader based on what I've heard and don't count out TD on defense as he's a lead by example kind of guy. We also have to figure that more people are going to step up and take on leadership roles now that those spots are open.

Thank you CRA!! Thank you for once again showing you don't know poo. Martin played safety in college. He is athletic enough to play cb...but it is obvious from his play on the field he is a natural safety. The safety position in a tampa 2 defense are interchangable! Martin will lead. As for whether hell play fs or ss...that hasn't been decided yet, and yet you act like you know everything. Don't let me stop you from embarressing yourself further!

Lol

Don't know if we will blitz a lot. Meeks defenses are known not to do that. A cover 2 is very easy to beat if you blitz too often as the holes are very obvious and easy to beat by a high school quarterback.

As for consistent penetration, when have we ever had that? Even Peppers has been inconsistent.
