Setting up to defend the pass

With the Saints raping secondaries you can never be too good against he pass. The only secondary to slow them down was the Jets.

The NFC south is a snake and we're going for the head. You need to be successful in the division first. We can't get into the playoffs with a 4 game swing already playing against us. Look at what the falcons did to us. We would have had winning seasons if we could have stopped Vick sooner.

I guess you must have forgotten that the Saints were 6th in rushing last year, and Atlanta was 15th. To win in this division you have to be good against the run and the pass. Given that we were 4-2 in the division last year with Harris, how are we going to be better without him if we end up 28th against the run this year.

And as for Vick- he ran against us all day which would argue for better run defense not pass defense.

Maybe you should try again........

Pass rush can come from places other than the defensive line. We saw more LB blitzes last year, I think we will see even more now that Peppers is gone. We just got done drafting a LB (Norwood) who is primarily known for his pass rushing ability... probably more than just coincidence.

Not really- of our 31 sacks-25 came from the defensive line. Between all the linebackers they accounted for 5.5 or less than 20%. This is going to be 2007 revisited.

We were 4-2 in the division last year.

That was what I thought but in counting them I must have given Tampa a win at their house when we actually beat them 28-20. I guess I start getting tired after midnight and need to stop posting. LOL That even reinforces my point further. Thanks!!

while i do think that they are trying to get better at defending the pass i think this had more to do with meeks wanting a faster defense. that has always been the plan...guys that are fast and swarming to the ball. that is something that has been talked about by quite a few players. you have to be fast. diggs wasn't and neither is harris.

i do believe that there is more to his getting traded than that. probably a lot of factors but we should be getting an upgrade in the defense. williams is pretty good against the run...i'd say he's a bigger asset against the run.

does that help us at SS? nope, not really but overall it is a step up. godfrey might be considered a bit of an upgrade over harris, though.

not sure how many people remember seeing that article that had harris as having one of the ten lowest tackling efficiency numbers among safeties.

his personality on the field was infectious but his skill set was in decline. he was hard hitter and a leader but not nearly the top at his position. we can do better. hopefully someone on the team will be better.

I think you are absolutely correct that this was a coverage speed move regarding skill sets. Most of the defensive back guys we brought in are going to be quicker and better in coverage.

I really don't think he was in decline at this point. He is only 27 and is frankly in his prime. In thirteen games he had 60 tackles, 3 Ints and 2 forced fumbles.

The place he will be missed in the secondary is as the undisputed leader. Harris was a hitter and he made the defense instantly tougher. He was a big reason the defense got much tougher as the year progressed and as he returned to full health. And he was the glue that held the secondary together.

This is one more situation where a veteran who produced leadership and results is being replaced by a guy with little to no experience. As I have said before it isn't replacing one guy here and there but the cumulative effect of replacing most of your veterans.

Do you think Ray Lewis hasn't declined somewhat? Why does he still play for Baltimore? Because he is the heart and soul of the defense. Well Beason and Harris were the heart and soul of ours the last few years.

I hope I am wrong but I expecting a buttkicking by Chicago this year. They will end up being one of the most improved teams this year and Peppers and Harris will be 2 of the biggest reasons.

Great post.... I was with you 100% until the last little paragraph. Right now i expect us to win that game... I think Chicago will be weak against the run, and we will pound them and play ball control. If Jay gives us a few turnovers then thats the game. I hope I am right about giving Chicago a buttkicking! :D:boxing_smiley:

Chicago's defense has improved. It doesn't take away the fact that:

A) Absolutely TERRIBLE offensive line

B) Quarterback who threw more ints than Jake Delhomme(partly because of the offensive line too..)

C) Lack of a run game as a result of the terrible offensive line

D) Their receiver situation is worst than ours. All of their receivers are inexperienced and/or bad. That one guy Aroushsomething/Knox looked good, but it doesn't take away that Hester isn't good. Aroush/Knox are both very inexperienced, too.

Best defense in the world doesn't mean poo if you can't pass OR run the ball.

I hope you are right but it is hard for me to think we will be in that good of shape when Chicago gets here. Our defense will look nothing like last year and will need to gel which could take a good while. Meanwhile a great deal of pressure will be on Moore and the offense to keep us in games. There could be a real possibility that we are 1-3 going into the Chicago game. And both Peppers and Harris will have huge chips on their shoulders and itching to get even with us. It could get ugly quick.

Where is dimbee when you need him?????????

Seriously Chicago is going to be much better on defense which has always fueled their offense. I know the offensive line has been poor but I expect them to keep working on that. Cutler should be better as well with Martz as OC. I expect them to be much more dynamic on offense.

And for what is worth we have parlayed defense being our trademark with an offense that doesn't lose the game for years under Fox. Much of Moore's success last year was due to the defense. This year he won't have that luxury especially early in the year.

someone else will step up. i'm not worried about that.

i'm worried about a few teams we will be playing next year but chicago isn't one of them. harris and peppers may have something to prove but the rest of the team probably has a lot to prove as well.

i'm going to be surprised if harris wasn't pulling for this trade. if that is the case then the rest of the players are going to be feeling a bit betrayed.

It's not like I'm hating on the Bears. I'm simply saying it's going to be hard for their offense to be successful when they have that offensive line & lack of playmakers. Cutler took the snap and had about 2 seconds before he had to start running away from defenders. I felt bad for him because I think he could be successful with a good line(as seen in Denver..)

and much of Moores success was due to being behind our offensive line, having 2 of the best RB's in the game, and Smitty. Cutler's situation was nowhere near Moores.
