Will Matt Moore be cut/traded?

we'll probably trade a QB in the next offseason but this year they are going to be finding out who can work.

moore will increase his value a good bit and be seen as a pretty reliable QB which will make him good trade bait. i'm thinking that clausen is the guy that they would like to be the franchise QB. his ceiling is much higher.

The only problem with Moore increasing his value is that he will be an UFA next off-season. And barring a true breakout season, I don't see the team franchising him...so, we won't be able to trade him and he'll just walk away.

The only way it would even be a possibility to trade Moore is if somebody offers a nice deal (#2 or better) this year and we find some vet QB to sign. But even then, it's probably a pretty big longshot that we would trade him.

under current rules he would still be a restricted free agent, he woul not have 6 yrs vested exp he would need to qualify to be unrestricted

This is true, I hadn't really thought of that. I guess since I believe the league and players will ultimately work something out to avoid a lockout, that things will get back to normal next off-season...but then that's a pretty big assumption I'm making. So who knows.

Franchise...then sign and trade.

Happens all the time.

The problem there is what to do if Moore does well enough to warrant a decent contract, but not an elite QB one. If we franchised him, we could end up being on the hook to pay him a top five QB salary...which would be ridiculously expensive. And he showed this year, he's not shy about signing a tender really quick. So what happens if we tender him, he quickly signs, then nobody wants to pony up the pick(s) along with his tendered salary. Now maybe he would be willing to sacrificec the 14 million or so tender for a long term contract, but that would be a huge gamble to count on. Things could work out, but the potential is there to really screw us. Not to mention, they may have someone they view as a core player, such as Davis or Williams, they NEED to tender. So I don't see the team going that route.

Of course, all this is contingent upon Fox & co. viewing Clausen as the future at QB, and feeling he will be ready...which I think will be the case.
