Harris saw this coming for a while...

Well for a start we do not run against ourselves so using us as an example is a bit of an oddity.

What is it that threatens you most about NO? Their ability to pass over any team, or the ability to run down peoples throats once they are already up?

What is it that threatens you the most about Atlanta? Their ability to get the ball to White & Gonzalez, or the over used Turner and Norwood?

You can make a case for Atlanta, but our other two teams really have to be treated as a pass first team. TB cause they suck, NO because they are SO good at what they do best.

With New Orleans, you have to stop both. With Tampa Bay, they couldn't do either very well this year. Atlanta looks to be an improving passing team, but thats tbd.

We are in the division so it isn't an oddity but a fact. If you meant to talk just about NO or Atlanta then you wouldn't have included the division just those teams in our division.

What scares me about New Orleans is that you have to play the pass but can't sell out or they gash you with the run. We typically play them hard against the run and try to make them one dimensional. The biggest problem with New Orleans is their quick strike capacity.

As for Atlanta they are alot like us. You have to stop the run and make Ryan beat you with the pass. And Tampa has traditionally been a running team with a dink and dunk passing attack. They often pass against us because Fox's philosophy is geared toward stopping the run. Plus they have a bunch of injuries to their running backs over the last few years.

I know we are in the division, but you were talking about the top rushing teams when refuting that WE are going to have two coverage safeties. So our rushing performance is meaningless when considering we were talking about our shift to a pass orientated defence.

New Orleans is good in both facets, but you can't kid yourself about which part is most feared. NO ran 468 times for 2,106 yards (4.5 average) and 21 TDs, they passed for 544 times for 4, 355 (8.3 average) and 34 touchdowns. For a team that was almost always winning, to pass nearly 100 times more than they ran is pretty significant, especially when this last season was when they 'toned it down' with regards to the passing attack.

Atlanta is much like us, only they have an established passing attack, balanced is the most appropriate term. However, with Ryan in his third year I would expect them to try and progress the passing game to something a little more demanding on the defence. That is my opinion though, so for now they are a balanced team. They passed more than they ran even more lop sided than NO.

TB is a team trying to find it's identity. They likely will rely on the running game to get by, but will have to pass a lot as they might be losing a lot. You can say 'traditionally' all you want, but in Morris' second year and his second year for Freeman, their offence could be about to go through some changes.

You were the one saying that we were a passing division not a running division. I just gave you the facts. We are a running division. We have 2 teams in the division that can pass the ball- one really well. Right now the Panthers and Tampa are TBD.

As for who are we built to beat? It has always been Atlanta not New Orleans. If we look at the last 4 years for example we swept NO twice and split the other 2 years for a record of 6-2. We have a losing record against Atlanta in the division and in the last 4 years are 4-4. And yes Atlanta threw more than they ran in 2009 but it was an abberation not a trend. We said that Turner would burn out carrying too many times in 2008 and he did. He only got 871 yards on 178 carries (4.9)in 2009 with Snelling getting an additional 613 on 142 carries (4.3). They ran 451 times for 1876 yards and passed for 570 times for 3571 yards. Compare than to 2008 when they ran 560 times for 2443 yards and threw 434 times for 3336. Notice they threw the ball 140 times more but only gained around 200 yards more. Why? Because a good run game sets up the passing game. You throw fewer times but you gain more yards per throw. Atlanta has always been a good running team and will continue to be one.

As for Tampa, they are much like us, in a rebuilding mode. You know we will run but how often and well will depend on staying in games and not having to pass to catch up. The same for Tampa. They threw so much because they were often behind and had to throw to catch up. If they are in ball games this year they will be running the ball quite a bit.

So which is more feared about Carolina our running or passing? Most people would say our running yet even with Jake being awful we only ran 60 more plays which equates to 4 plays per game. We ran the ball 525 times for 2498 yards (5.2) and passed the ball 466 times for 2799 (6.6). We ran for 16 Tds and passed for 16. So how much is reality versus perception??

NO passed the ball a total of 76 times more than they ran which equates to less than 5 times a game. What is feared is what I said earlier- not just passing in general but quick strike capacity which produced over 60 passes of 20 yards or more. It doesn't hurt when your QB has a rating of 109 either. Of course they pass the ball alot but honestly when Brees threw for over 5000 yards they were 8-8. What made the biggest difference last year? A true running game and a better defense. The running game made the passing game more effective as it does for any team.

Ask Fox what his philosophy is and I guarantee it is run the ball and stop the run. That hasn't changed and won't. Harris getting canned was partly about his cover skills, partly his mouth, and partly the constant youth movement to get younger with few if any longterm committments.
