We have to be getting a new NT right?

Why doesn't Evero like the prototypical 3-4 NT?   You know, the 330+ pounder in the mold of a Sumo wrestler.

probably because they are not as scheme diverse. you have to take them out on passing downs. His scheme seems to favor being in base alot and not alo t of blitzing.

I feel like his scheme works best vs. pass happy offenses, but we are back to heavy running and I just don’t see his scheme working as well going forward. Just look at the Broncos in the playoffs, they could do nothing against the run.

Derek Brown, Mason Grahm/Deone Walker, Ashaun Robinson

Solved.

I'm still on team trade back to late teens and pick up an additional 2nd round pick.  I'll take Jalon Walker as an Edge along with Dani-Dennis Sutton.

Dani Dennis Sutton returning for his senior year.

Fantastic thread, Thank You. Unfortunately Tuttle was a bust this season and not having Derrick Brown hurt. Asking a rookie to play starting NT in the NFL is not real successful. Milton Williams from the Eagles would be a nice option.

If we sign Milton Williams I would literally poo my pants with excitement, my dream FA signing.

It's not particularly popular among 3=4 defenses now. Look around the top defenses depth charts. The 3-4 comprises most of the top defenses and most use smallish NT. The eagles don't even use Jordan Davis in the middle. The Chargers NT is 5'11 310.

Odd but that's the trend

Free Agents NTs: I'm hoping we get DJ Jones and bring him home.

We have to be getting one of these guys right? RIGHT? I Know they "claim" EJ "likes" undersized NTs for his scheme but I'm more apt to believe that Tuttle was just the best they could get with all the dead money and EJ was just saying he could scheme with an undersized NT not that he prefers it. In what world would you "prefer" your 3-4 to not have a traditional NT? Makes no sense to me but I feel it is honestly the biggest weakness on the team, moreso than Edge or #1 WR but getting one of these NT's in FA fixes it.

For reference this is Shy Tuttle PFF: image.thumb.png.3eb61b8668ad2599a1218535722b2124.png

DJ Jones PFF:

Similar stats but twice the run defender at the same position. Would help a lot.

DJ Jones makes $10M AAV Shy Tuttle... $9.4M AAV, he has GOT to go. Cutting Tuttle would save $6.5M on the cap, then go pay what you have to to a real NT so we can stop the run next year.

I’d be happy with Jones or Hill. Either of those guys would pair nicely with Brown and Robinson. Javon Hargrove could be another option, as he’s sure to be a cap casualty after a brief stint with the 49ers.

Which teams currently run a 3-4 with an undersized NT and does it well?

All the top defenses are 3-4 and use undersize NT. I'm not saying all but look at defenses ranked then look at depth charts.

Chargers for 1

Damn.... I guess I'm banging the table for Ashton Gillotte as my mid-round EDGE draft crush.

As a Penn State fan I could not be happier, Dani is a DAWG. Will be a first rounder next year. If you like Dani as a prospect I think you would love Jared Ivey, he is a big 6 ft 6 285 DE, great run defender and has a true bull rush aspect to his game. Needs to add some tools to his pass rush belt but I think he’s gonna play in the league for a while.

    • There is usually one annual glaring perceived need that we ignore for the most part. But I think the defense’s performance was poor enough to warrant a pretty major overhaul sans Brown & Horn. Trevin should hopefully stick and Jewell+Wonnum should still be here, but the rest is pretty much up in the air. Futures of Tuttle, Robinson, Woods, Jackson, & Shaq are unsure even considering some contracts. Seems like a decent IDL FA and draft to add from.
    • I guess you could look at it this way:  There is a LOT invested in Bryce right now. Do you continue to make sure that his development is improving, or do you abandon that momentum and salvage the defense?  He is good, but he does NOT have that big name, big time WR.  Going to get a WR we can call a #1 is probably stupid right now.  Here is why: Higgins and Godwin, the two top options in free agency, imo, are #2 WRs who got a lot of balls because Chase and Evans were the focus of the defense--I think the system made them better than they would be here--without a #1 to give them single coverages and no safety over the top.  THEY would suddenly be the #1, and their numbers would fall.  What would their salaries be based on?  Production in other cities.  It rarely works.  Most top WRs in free agency to go places with top QBs--we'd have to overpay the market then overpay the performance.  Most if not all of the top free agent WRs were often the second option during the pre-snap reads or check down processes.  Put him in the #1 WR shoes, he is more likely to struggle.  Some key questions I ask myself: What is wrong with having 5 WRs who can catch the ball and no single person as the true #1?  Imagine a group of 5 or 6 WRs featuring well rounded, talented WRs.  Not a Rambo knife, a steak knife, and three butter knives--A Swiss Army Knife.  Let the #1 emerge and develop on the roster-- What would benefit Bryce more--a #1 WR or a stud #1 TE and a good WR with a good defense? I understand the knee jerk reaction to give him weapons--but be smart about it.
