NBC Sports cleans up at Sports emmys (not literally)

We've wrapped up our six-day trip to New York City with a visit to the 31st Annual Sports Emmys, an evening that featured the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to the incomparable John Madden and a variety of awards for our partners at NBC Sports.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and NBC Universal Sports & Olympics Chairman Dick Ebersol presented the award to Madden. As Jones and Ebersol took the stage, Ebersol pretended to shoot video of Jones with a cell phone, a nod to the recently-publicized recording of Jones talking about former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells and quarterback The Golden Calf of Bristol.

In accepting the award, Madden was, well, Madden -- charming and engaging and plain-spoken and hilarious.

Cris Collinsworth????? who replaced Madden on Sunday Night Football, was named Outstanding Sports Personality, Sports Event Analyst. Bob Costas, the host of Football Night in America, was named Outstanding Sports Personality, Studio Host.

NBC's Sunday Night Football received the nod for Outstanding Live Sports Series, and NBC's broadcast of Super Bowl XLIII won the Emmy for Outstanding Live Sports Special.

Also, our friends at NBCSports.com secured the hardware for Outstanding New Approaches -- Short Format for Countdown to Vancouver.

Oh, and Sunday Night Football Extra on NBCSports.com was nominated for Outstanding New Approaches -- Sports Event Coverage. And we lost, likely due to the poor quality of the smartass comments provided on a weekly basis by a certain Internet hack who shall remain nameless, but who would have claimed credit for the whole thing if we had won.

And, yes, I specifically did not mention the nomination in advance, in order to avoid jinxing our chances. So much for Italian superstitions.
