Question about McCown and Moore

If McCown was asked to come back, do you think he would be our day one starter? Moore couldn't beat him in Training Camp for two years running. Anyone have a guess why?

I'm honestly interested in what the coaching staff's perception of Moore is that had them wait so long to trust in him to run the team. I truly believe that if they had the confidence in him that they had in Jake in 2003, he would have been playing a lot earlier. I also think that if McCown hadn't gotten hurt he would have played a lot earlier.

Instead, although Delhomme's injury seemed awful convenient, it looked like they waited until they absolutely had to before they gave Moore the keys. And this is with his rookie performance in mind, of course.

And what does that say about Moore's chance to hold the job versus Clausen?

Please don't litter this thread with "Fox sucks!" and various other conspiracy theories. And Jake is gone, leave the bashing for other threads. And don't credit him with winning the games singlehandedly, in all four of his victories we held our opponents to under 10 points. That's a winning formula in and of itself.

What's wrong with Moore, anyway? In the coach's minds at least.

I've asked myself the same thing. I have ahunch that if the only Qb's we had were Mccown and Moore, Mccown would be the starter. Eventhough Moore proved he could do something his rookie season, our coaching staff still wouldnt trust him ahead of Mccown to be the backup. Maybe he actually is lazy, but I dont know that and the only people who do know that are Fox and Moore. Your right if they had faith in him like the did Jake he would have started maybe sonner than he did last season.

I for one think he will hold off Clausen to start some games this season. I do however feel than Clausen will start eventually. I feel that way, not because i think Moore will play bad, but because I feel that the coaching staff just doesnt like Moore. From what I see on the field he is havin fun. I bring that up because if he didnt have fun he woulndt care and if he didnt care then i could see why he wasnt playing. But the man does care so to me, it is a mystery why the coaches do not approve of him.

McCown would have started last season in place of Moore. He wouldn't this season.

I'm not sure what the deal with Moore is, honestly. He's put up good numbers when starting and won games, but the front office doesn't seem comfortable with him. I thought he played pretty badly his first two games, played well the next two. The Saints game was a mulligan.

With no inside information, I'd guess preparation (film study, work ethic) or attitude. Like you noted in another post, he's never once flown up the depth chart, he seems to get time due to circumstance.

He's out after this season unless Clausen is completely horrible or gets jail time. We'll try and tag/trade or something if possible, but I doubt we keep him.

Remember, Matt Moore was on IR for all of the 08 season and, if I remember correctly, he was still recovering right up til TC last year, so he was probably pretty rusty for a while.

This definitely has to do with last years depth chart.

But is the op a real question? The hypothetical answer: this is Matt Moore's job to lose. McCown has no chance in coming back here unless there are injury issues.

The OP is a real question, but not the one you're thinking. I know McCown won't come back, but I asked that to point out that it wasn't just Jake that beat out Moore, and it wasn't just because Fox wants to play his vets that Moore didn't get PT.

Something just doesn't seem right. Maybe he's a gamer, and doesn't put in the work in the film room or during practice. Maybe there's something they know that we don't, and something which a good DC with a few game films and a real reason to win can hone in on an exploit.

And they were going to take a QB high. I'm glad it was Clausen. I'm also glad they got Pike. Obviously they want to make QB a priority. Maybe the problem is work ethic and they wanted to push Matt a little. Maybe it's something else.

Oh, and I do believe that he's the starter and it's still his job to lose. They sunk a lot of money into him this offseason. They're planning to use him.

This is totally a guess, but it could be his work ethic... The kind of stuff we as fans don't get a real view of... Fowler wrote that Moore is a good guy and solid player, but isn't the 'last one off the field'... It's entirely possible they question his upside, leadership, work ethic or any number of things... I too have noticed what you're talking about... Not only could he not beat out McCown, he couldn't beat out Vinny either... Just in keeping things in perspective, he was an Undrafted FA, which means every team passed on him completely for one reason or another, 7 times... On top of that, he was left unprotected in Dallas, where they 'loved' him, but not enough to have him on the 53 man roster... At no point in his career has he been good enough to break camp higher than any team's #3 starter... Perhaps he's simply been lucky as a starter so far, I don't know... It's entirely possible... As for my own feelings, I have enjoyed the success he has had when playing, but when he's in the game I just don't feel real secure... Who knows, he could develop into a Pro Bowler, and I sincerely hope he does... Whether it's here, or elsewhere... But given the team's hesitant attitude towards handing him the keys to the team tells me there's a disconnect in the amount of conficence they have in him, and that's the biggest reason we put 2 more QB's on the roster this past weekend...

Nance, I feel like we're on the same wavelength here.

It could be a "surfer" attitude that doesn't play well with the coaches, but works in the huddle. Whatever it is though, I hope it's been identified, pointed out, and he's given the opportunity to correct it. He just got the team, it would suck to see him lose it right away.
